TERA Online Almost Gets a Release Date for Western and Europe Gamers

TERA : Announced for Western Audiences

We’ve all known about the Korean version of Bluehole Studio’s upcoming MMORPG TERA for some time now, but details on a Western release were scant, if not entirely unavailable. That is, until today.

Bluehole Studios has announced the formation of a new publisher, En Masse Entertainment, whose sole task is to focus on bringing Korean MMOG’s to the west, with their first project being the highly anticipated TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea.

En Masse will debut the game at this year’s GDC, and has set an early 2011 release date for the Western version of the game, while the Korean version is set to launch sometime this year.

What we know about Tera onlne!

Bluehole Studio
Based in Seoul, South Korea, Bluehole Studio is the company behind TERA. The experienced development team is best known for having worked with NCSoft on their Lineage games. Dedicated to creating such a revolutionary game as TERA, the company appears to be aiming towards impressing its audience with compelling graphics, a unique battle system and chances to involve the community in the game’s economy and political system.

TERA
The word TERA is an acronym for “The Exiled Realm of Arborea”. The game has been in development for around three years and it runs on the Unreal Engine 3. Thus far, the game boasts a very unique combat system (which you can preview here), six races, eight classes (both of which can be previewed here), a promised political system, and next generation graphics. Though the exact release date has not been announced, the game is planned to be released in both Korea and North America sometime in 2010. There have been two closed BETA tests so far in Korea and one FGT (Focus Group Test) in the North America region.

Currently, from translations we know the tentative names of ten regions in the game, City of Witches, Vampire Hill, Palanuo Valley, Mist Island, Pirate Cave, Rebellion Plains, The Howling Cliff, Snake Island, Barbarian Valley, and Altar of Dakun. The maps found in game show that TERA will release with probably well over 20 unique regions.

Lore
From what we can piece together of lore, the story of TERA is one of adventure and war, all set on exotic terrain. Some of the playable races, like the Baraka and Popori appear to have lived fairly peacefully throughout Arborea’s history, while races like the savage Aman and hardy Castanics have never shied away from battle. Ever tying to improve on their civilizations, the High Elves and Humans have overcome hardship and work to remain vastly powerful.

Currently there are no factions in TERA, however, the promised political system could have a large impact on what lore we know.

Tera Online MMORPG

A brief look at the upcoming next-generation MMORPG by Bluehole Studios, The Exiled Realm of Arborea (TERA) Online.

The Next Generation Of MMOs

Tera OnlineBluehole Studios’ next-generation MMO, TERA Online: The Exiled Realm of Arborea is a triple-A title that is already turning heads and gaining a little bit of recognition for its drastic evolutionary step in MMORPG visuals and its dynamic new combat system.

It’s very rare for an MMO to come along with graphics and a gameplay module that far surpasses the current-day MMORPGs and their pseudo real-time active battles. Even newer MMOs like Aion Online or Champions still suffer from the timed back-and-forth combat mechanics that prove to really standardize and bore-up the gameplay experience. Nevertheless, Bluehole’s revolutionary new system isn’t quite active like most console action games, but it’s not quite real-time turn-based like most other MMOs. They’ve yet to fully divulge exactly how it will work but it already appears as if it will be based more-so on character dynamics and interaction than standard hit/miss roll-dice.

The Art Of Combat

A very visual kind of MMOSupposedly players will now be in charge of how fights and battles play out, as opposed to everyone standing around exchanging timed blows; waiting for the cool-down on the strongest attack to run out so the process can be repeated until someone drops dead after repetitively jamming down on the right mouse button. The encounters will make use of the surrounding environments to encourage more unique and vibrant fights and get players strategically making use of the battlefield around them. That certainly sounds like the right sort of direction for an MMO considering that often times players get bored using the same old quick-keys standing around until the enemy dies.

Archetypes And A Little Hip Action

Apparently Elves have super-models, too

Now that the whole battle system has been explored, let’s talk a little bit about the driving force behind TERA Online’s character setup, classes and archetypes. Players will create a character from six archetypes and eight character classes. The team is currently optimizing the game to support all sorts of combinations between each race and each class. The challenge lies in the fact that each character class has its own series of animations, attacks and defensive measures that players actually get to see while playing the character. For example, a female human sorceress will perform a sultry dance to cast a certain spell or a large berserker will wield a large weapon as if its actually weighty, which makes the game depict each character class with its own series of individuality.
