Lancer Column: Lance and Board

Lance and board. Doesn’t quite sound right does it?

A little information to start what will hopefully be a series of successful Lancer columns. As I haven’t been lucky enough to be in any of the FGTs (big hint to anyone in a position of power who reads this ;D), these columns will be largely made up of pure speculation and my opinions on articles I’ve read or videos I’ve seen. Until I get to try the game out for myself, that is.

What attracted me, personally, to the Lancer class were a few simple points. Heavy armour, fun gameplay mechanics, and a button for raising one’s shield. I realise the last point was more of a TERA mechanic as opposed to a Lancer mechanic, but it boils down to the one reason I always shied away from tank classes in previous MMOs I’ve played – interaction. I’ll use World of Warcraft as a basic example. In a nutshell, tanking in WoW consists mainly of standing still in front of the enemy with one eye on one’s health and one eye on one’s threat meter. With some exceptions, what the enemy itself is doing is largely unimportant so long as you keep oneself at the top of its threat list. The Lancer can’t do that. The Lancer needs to stand between the enemy and allies to use the shield to block attacks from reaching allies. The Lancer needs to actually press and hold a button to execute said block. The Lancer doesn’t stack a blocking stat and pray to the rng Gods that a portion of incoming damage is reduced.

Interaction. The one thing that tanking has lacked thus far in MMOs. The act of actually physically blocking attacks from reaching allies just gives that much more weight to the word “tank”. PvP is also a factor in my decision to play a Lancer in TERA when I mostly played as dps in other MMOs. It’s entirely possible, and sometimes the best thing to do, to just bypass a tank completely and ignore them until you’ve managed to beat down the squishies providing backup for the tank. With the collision detecting preventing enemies from running right through you, in theory it should be entirely possible for a Lancer and allies to command control of a choke point such as a bridge. With the lancer standing on the bridge or a mountain pass, shield raised, and said allies staying back a little to heal the Lancer and attack the enemies. With good coordination between the players, a choke point such as this could decide the outcome of the PvP encounter. A shield used for shielding.

This raises a very important question in my mind – race selection. Presumably the larger races such as Aman will have a larger hit box, resulting in an easier time in blocking attacks from reaching allies, or blocking enemies from passing the Lancer at a choke point. Not to say that the smaller races just won’t be able to do any of this. Will it be easier for larger races? Will the shield hit box be the same size for each character? This is highly unlikely, and it could possibly mean that for certain points in the game, a Lancer will have a restricted choice of race. Honestly, I can’t imagine a Popori Lancer having the same size shield hit box as an Aman Lancer.

Then we come to the Lancer’s role in parties. Up until now, I’ve only been talking as if Lancers were only viable as tanks. This is not necessarily true. With proper gearing and (very heavy on the assumptions here) speccing, Lancers might well be able to output some proper dps numbers. Mostly for PvP and solo content, of course, but with good enough reactions it could be possible for a Lancer to do extra dps in PvE by sacrificing some tank-like stats. This may strike some of you as an odd thing to do, but with TERA’s heavy emphasis on reacting to enemy attacks and raising your shield in time, or even moving out of the attack’s area of effect altogether, Lancers may end up as quite the dps boost to the party. Imagine this – you’re PvPing and you see a Lancer heading your way. Your party is occupied elsewhere, so is the Lancer’s. It’s common knowledge that tanks generally don’t do much damage, so you figure that you could prevent the Lancer’s advance for a while to give your party a chance to catch up to you for backup. The Lancer blocks one of your attacks which is followed by Riposte. Suddenly, Crash Gear then Shield Bash. You’re stunned and have reduced armour. The Lancer’s doing a lot more damage than you first anticipated. You try to run away to get some breathing room and think about what to do next. The Lancer charges. You try to run again? Noose.

Not only could play like this do quite a decent amount of damage, but coming from someone that’s supposed to be a tank? It may well leave a lot of players disorientated; damage and ferocity unexpected from a tank. Even with gearing for damage output, with good reactions and anticipation of what other people will do it such situations, a skilled Lancer could be a very formidable opponent.

This column feels a little too technical to me. I'll try to break up the next one if I can. Let me know what you think.

To me, this opportunity is as much a learning experience as it is about sharing my opinions and experiences with the community. Maybe I said something outrageous; maybe I said something completely wrong, any feedback is good feedback. The more feedback I receive then the more I can better myself and better my columns.
I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it. Peace out.

TERA Fans PAX Interview with Brian Knox!

Hey, TERA Fans! PAX 2010 ended yesterday and in the wake of the storm, I have the results of TERA Fan's interview with Senior Producer, Brian Knox! Thanks so much for contributing questions guys :D While there's not a whole lot of new information, I think some of his comments leave open at least lots of room for speculation.

So check out the interview below and enjoy! You can find all our TERA PAX coverage here.

Amira: So hey, Brian! Once again, all the questions are straight from TERA Fans. We had lots of questions for you and we picked out a few. So for one, what in-game events are being planned for players to participate in?

Brian: That's a good question! So right now, our focus for in-game events is going to be mostly on trying to find those spots where people hit a wall because we're really focused on the journey to level 60. So, once the game's out, sometimes players find areas that are hard to get through and we want to focus our events around that. How we're going to do that I don't know. But we do plan on having them!

Amira: And will there also be holiday-type events?

Brian: Yeah, we are trying to have an events system. It's one of those things that's like every feature takes away development time. We want to have these but we may not have them available right at launch.

Amira: Will there be any non-combat, or combat pets in-game?

Brian: So, we have the Homonculus which is kind of a pet. It doesn't quite follow you right now but we're looking into ways to expand that as well.

Amira: And the Mystic pets; will those really be pets?

Brian: Well they're summons: they come out and last for only a short amount of time to help out. There's a healing one, there's a dps one, and there's like a tank one. But I wouldn't call Mystics a pet class. It's hard to explain-- they're a little bit different than you're used to, so you'll see.

Amira: Sam Kim once mentioned that the development team was considering adding more armor slots. Is there any information on that?

Brian: Yeah, we've added two more slots and we'll see them soon.

Amira: Are there plans to allow players to customize the look of their gear or spells at this point?

Brian: Not at this point but we're looking heavily into both the dying system and the ability to change gear models as well. So I'm not sure if any of that would make it in by launch, but it's definitely on our list of ideas.

Amira: Some guildmasters are very concerned about recruiting more guildmates than the maximum guild size in TERA will allow for. Is there any information on about how large guilds will be able to get at launch?

Brian: Y'know, that's a good question. Right now, I can't answer that but I would really like to get back to you on it because I think that's an important one.

UPDATE: Brian Knox let me know that the current guild size is 300 members by default. This is always subject to change.

Amira: On the topic of guilds, is there any more information on how extensive the overall guild system will be?

Brian: Well the guild system will really play into the battleground system, which we're not talking a lot about just yet. I think that's where you'll see the guild system really work. Since we're not faction based, guilds will become allies or rivals as well.

Amira: Some players are very concerned about westernization. Can you talk about what aspects of gameplay are being westernized?

Brian: All aspects are being evaluated. In our last focus group test, we had everybody answer a 120 point survey which was a lot of questions. What it did was allow us to hold up a transparency and compare where results are similar and different among players in the West and players in the East. We're able to identify those areas. There's a lot of stuff that lined up and in the feedback, there were a lot of things, particularly surrounding solo play and the leveling curve. And so, those were the two areas that players felt different about. Also, specific features have been added as well. The achievement system and the controller support are things that kind of originated in the west.

Amira: How will the lore of TERA be explained to players beyond quest text? Will there be cut-scenes at all?

Brian: Yeah, actually we have been adding cut-scenes. Hopefully they'll help tell the story in a little bit more of an epic fashion.

Amira: Are there any plans to have a designated Oceanic server available at launch?

Brian: Not at this time. But we're looking at the territory. We want to make sure that if we do it, we do it right.

Amira: Is there any information available on mounts at all?

Brian: There are mounts, and we're tweaking them. We're trying to make sure they're the right speeds right now. At this time, there will not be combat mounts.

Amira: Are there any plans to allow third party addons in-game?

Brian: Not at this time. We're actually doing what we can to minimize the UI as much as possible.

Amira: Finally: are you still re-evaluating the idea of allowing all races to be able to be all classes?

Brian: Right now, it looks like that's what going to happen but I can't really say for sure. That is what we're aiming for, though. In the version that we're playing off right now, actually, we're balancing the Human male, so that way we can balance that off the other races. It's a lot less development time to balance one and get it all right-- in terms of all the numbers-- and then we can balance things around that.

RUMOR: Blizzard’s Eyonix to join En Masse Studios?

Please note before reading: This article is based on a rumor and all content is merely speculation!

Good Afternoon, TERA Fans! Today a rumor has been circulating over on the MMO-Champion forums that ex-Blizzard employee, Eyonix, will be joining En Masse Entertainment to work on TERA. Eyonix officially announced his departure from Blizzard Entertainment on April 2nd in the following forum post:

Quote

For nearly six years, we've shared our thoughts with one and other, we've laughed, we've argued, and we've cried -- the crying part was just me wasn't it? Those times, I'm afraid must come to an end as I've made the decision to explore opportunities outside of Blizzard.

It has very honestly been a huge pleasure, and I thank you all for allowing 'Eyonix' to always remain a very fond memory as I move on.

Of course, as can be seen in this post, there is no real indication at all that Eyonix may be a new edition to the TERA team, aside from the underlined text. The actual rumor began with this post on MMO-Champion today:

Quote

Last week Eyonix announced that he left Blizzard Entertainment and this week we now know where he headed to: It's En Masse

For people who don't know En Masse Entertainment, here is a quick link: http://www.enmasse.com/aboutus

He will meet Dr. Jae-Heon Yang (former CTO of NCSoft), Patrick Wyatt (Creator of Starcraft and Warcraft, also GuildWars founder), Chris Lee (responsible for publishments of all Halo and Need for Speed franchises, also Aion) and Brian Knox (Producer of Aion). The En Masse team is currently working on the western version of Tera (The Exiled Realm of Arborea) Online. More information about the game can be found @ the official homepage http://www.tera-online.com

With all those guys behind this game, it really seems to have a chance against WoW.

As seen here, the original poster of this thread gives no source for where this information comes from, so it could be as true as Popori being the only race available in FGT2! Even so, this would be an interesting development and TERA Fans staff will be on the lookout for any credible source that can confirm or deny this allegation.

So, TERA Fans, how much do you believe this rumor? Would bringing someone like Eyonix onto the team change anything about the game? If nothing else, it'd certainly bring TERA some more, well-deserved attention and add to the already star-studded and experienced En Masse team, wouldn't it?

So, TERA Fans, how much do you believe this rumor? Is it made more credible due to the face that ex-Blizzard employee Patrick Wyatt is on the team?

This week’s most popular posts!

Good morning, TERA Fans! We recently hit 200 members, yay! Thanks for joining, everyone!

Today, I've decided to put together a list of the three most interesting and popular threads found here at TERA Fans over our first week! Discuss these topics here and have a great Sunday!

Posted Image

So to start 'er off, the first topic that I chose to feature is the "What Race Will Your Main be?" Poll! It was pretty popular reply-wise, with 50 posts. It's also always interesting to see which races players are initially drawn to! I wonder if these numbers will change after more people have gotten to test the game?

As of today, Baraka are the least popular race D; Why do you think that is? It's interesting that they're the only race that will be genderless on release and are also the least popular. Is there a coloration?

With 27% of the vote, Castanics are currently the most popular race, with High Elves a close second. For most gamers, this shouldn't be a surprise, given that they're the most stereotypically beautiful races.

I remember once I read a developer comment where they mentioned that no matter what they do, players will always pick the "pretty" race. Well, looks like they were right for now!

Posted Image

The "What We Know So Far" thread quickly became popular and full of speculation. Among the topics brought up in the 51 replies were suggestions about the game's release, questions about private shops, jumping and lore.

When it comes to a release date, the official TERA-Online site still says sometime in 2010, so there's no reason for us to lose hope on a release this year!

I'm sure the lore will be fleshed out more as things are translated and information is released overall and jumping is apparently in the works still.

What other things would you like to know about the game, but don't yet? I want to know who the guys to the right are Dx

Posted Image

This thread stirred up passion in some and aggravation in others! "The potential for a Sort of Hardcore PvE?" thread quickly became a debate about PvP v. PvE, which it wasn't meant to have! xD

So, I'll try once more! This time, put your biases for or against PvE away and just answer, could TERA revolutionize PvE? Given its unique combat system and monster design, could it make PvE difficult and interesting? If you don't normally like to PvE, would you give it a try in TERA?

Have a great rest of your weekend guys!
