Translated Campfire Article

Tonight we're bringing you a translation from the Official Korean site, courtesy of That's Too Bad! This is hot off the press, having been posted to the site earlier today! Tomorrow, we'll bring you another translation from the official Korean site!

This article is a brief but official description of the "campfire" mechanic TERA uses.

Campfires are an interesting part of the out of combat TERA experience that our FGT players may have some experience with. This first article hits on a few major points of the campfire system. We'll start with an exact translation of the article and then I'll be happy to explain my personal experience with the system!

Quote

  • 1) Right-Clicking a parchment near the campfire(s) will let you use them.
  • 2) Putting firestarters in the campfire(s) will keep the fire alive.
  • 3) Staying in rested condition near the campfire will recover your "condition" back to 100%
  • 4) Using parchments near the campfire(s) will give you special effects.

While that's a quick overview of the features of TERA's campfires, there's a lot to say about them! Basically, there are campfires, just like the one pictured, all around the world of Arborea, usually near questing hubs. Those particular fires never burned out in my time testing.

However, these campfires also exist in portable versions, being given out as quest rewards. Players were able to put those down wherever they chose, though eventually, if not tended to, those fires would die out. That's the purpose of the firestarters! Any player was able to keep the fire alive by using a firestarter item. The portable fires were one-time-use items and weren't buyable at the time, but this could always change!

When you stand next to these campfires, two things change. For one it recovers your health more quickly than just wandering around and for another, it begins to change a statistic called your "condition". In the picture to the right, you'll see a big heart with a "100%" in it. That's how one's condition is depicted, with that player's at 100%. Your condition rises in percentage the longer you stay at the campfire. Better condition actually adds to your health by a certain amount, which I found really useful!

The original article mentions parchment papers which, when you throw them into the fires, give you and the people around you a buff specific to the particular paper.

Keep in mind, everything here is always subject to change!

TERA vs. other MMOs

Prowling

Two Prowling Gastanic Beauties

TERA is being distinguished from other popular MMOs such as World of Warcraft (WoW) by introducing the following: Next generation graphics, Dynamic battle system and Enhanced community experience.

The developers of TERA aspires to emotionaly impact players by providing high quality graphics coupled with stunning animation and special effects. One doesn’t have to look farther than the recently released Prologue video which showcased incredible in game action scenes with brutal mauling that left nothing to the imagination. Two scenes that stood out for me the most was the gang mauling of the female high elf caster and Popori (Cute Panda looking thing). Talk about emotionaly impacting players!

“1,2,3,1,2,3…” sounds familiar? According to Bluehole studio, the developer of TERA, facing a mob and repeatedly pressing a skill button is no longer exciting. The unprecedented hit, WoW, doesn’t even deviate from the traditional system. TERA plans to introduce a ground-breaking innovation to the MMORPG combat system. Here is what they had to say.

“From the start, the company hoped to realize a combat system that would set a new global standard. After careful consideration, it was decided that TERA’s fight sequences should closely resemble real fight scenes. Hence, TERA will introduce omni-directional attacks, where distance and direction must be coordinated for weapons and spells to work; moreover, healers must continuously take new battle positions to cast spells. Also, depending on body weight ratio between a mob and player, an enemy hit will register a fall-back reflect. These are some of the innovative features in TERA.”

TERA does not utilize zoning (section loading), that fragments players. Everyone will be able to seamlessly move throughout the world, sharing a singular combat experience. In order to realise this ambitious vision, Bluehole is using breakthrough robust client/server technology. One of their goal is to acheive the world’s highest concurrent user load per server. To further foster social interaction between players, players in TERA will not only experience battles with higher concurrent users, but also encounter a revolutionized interaction system for political and economic professions. TERA plans to offer a stable, non-disruptive in-game social life as well (player housing perhaps?).
