Ten Ton Hammer: TERA’s New UI, Glyph System and More Previewed at San Diego Comic-Con

Good evening, TERA Fans! Thanks to TERA Fans member Airwolfe591 I've been alerted to Ten Ton Hammer's coverage of the TERA team's community party last night at Comic Con 2010, including a video and a screenshot of the updated character creator.

New Character Creator

New Character Creator.                 Old Character Creator.

This new character creator screenshot contains a few more options than the old one.

  • Sliders: We initially saw character creation sliders in May via a video released by TERA's official Korean website. In this screenshot they are translated.
  • Addition of "presets" and "outfit" tabs. While the presets tab may be self explainatory, I wonder which "outfits" you're able to choose!
  • The adjustment of "details" to "features". This is probably the tab for things like horns and jewelry.

From what I can see on the video, there were two major announcements last night.

Glyph System
  • The glyph system is going to be one way players will be able to customize their characters.
  • Glyphs are meant to alter skills by either reducing their cooldowns, adding additional critical chance rate or increasing their damage output.
  • There will be 20 glyphs available to choose from for each class upon the game's release.
  • They will be obtainable through questing.
  • It will be easy to change which glyphs you have activated, but there will be a limit on how many glyphs you may have active at any time.

Achievement System
  • TERA will launch with an achievement system.
  • Currently there are achievements for things like joining your first group or dying for the first time.
  • The system is still very much under development.

Check out the video from Ten Ton Hammer below, demonstrating the glyph and achievement systems!

UI Changes

In the video, you may also have noticed the modified UI. From what I can see, the UI in the video is much less minimalistic, including graphic icons at the bottom of the screen. Here is a comparison between the old UI and the new one.

What do you think, TERA Fans?

Summary of Character Growth Suggestions from the Official Korean Site

Good morning, TERA Fans! A few weeks ago, Tree on the Official Korean website posted another summary of player feedback. This particular discussion focused on character growth.

In the wake of the news that the Korean version of TERA will be delayed, discussions like these have become increasingly important for the Western fan base to pay attention to because they give insight into the reasons for the game's delay. If the delay is to add little finishing touches like these ideas described, then personally I'm all for it!

You can find the discussion below, thanks to our fantastic translation team, Meiellink and Locien :3 Enjoy!

Good day, this is Tree.

First of all we'd like to express our gratitude to all of you who participated in the discussion about character growth that we held during the past two weeks.

This discussion was held to find out what would make character growth as fun as possible for future TERA players. We have summarized your varied and interesting suggestions.

What would you like to see in terms of character growth in TERA?

1. Changes in character appearence
We've been told that many players would like to see changes to a character's appearance as the player levels. Things such as battle scars, tattoos, patterns and other new customizable options should be available to choose from.

2. Skill effect changes
The skills that already exist in TERA are used a lot and we've been told that people would like to see these skills develop further as their characters grow.

3. Freely customize your character's stats
We've been told that people would like to be able to raise their characters' individual stats to develop their characters in a specific direction.

4. Proficiency system
We've been told that people want to see a proficiency level system for weapons and skill learning.

5. Unique traits for different races and classes
We've been told that people think that the addition of unique traits to distinguish races and classes will help stimulate the sense of character growth.

6. Skill tree system
We've been told that people think the addition of a skill tree system will give even more freedom to choose how to develop your character.

7. Pet growth according to character growth
We've been told that people want to see their pets(homunculus and pets introduced later on) grow according to their character's growth.

8. Et cetera
We also received many other opinions regarding character growth.

We'd like to thank you again for debating so passionately. We're counting that as many as possible of you will participate in today's upcoming discussion "What would you like to see in TERA's party system?".

Thank you very much.

Class Overview- Archer

Happy Valentines Day, TERA Fans! Tonight, we're happy to deliver the Archer translation from the Official Korean website :]

This description was originally translated by Meiellink into Japanese, then by Locien from Japanese to English and edited by me!

Enjoy!

Archer
Swift hunters who rely on precision.

This class is equipped with large bows, fast speed and the ability to continuously fire arrows from a long distance.

Archers have excellent maneuverability, deal large amounts of damage and fluster their enemies by incessantly firing barrages of arrows towards them.

Since Archers have sacrificed heavy armor in favor of swift maneuverability, keeping their distance from enemies is of utmost importance.

Archer Abilities

01. Basic Attack
A basic long ranged attack. Quickly fires an arrow that can hit one enemy.

02. Multi-Shot
A long ranged damage skill. Accumulates power and releases an attack that can hit multiple targets. The longer the Archer focuses the more powerful the attack becomes.

03. Piercing Shot
A long ranged damage skill. Fires an arrow piercing through enemies and causing a knockback or stun. The longer the Archer focuses the more powerful the attack becomes.

04. Concentrated Shot
A long ranged damage skill. Accumulates power and releases a devastating attack that can hit one target. The longer the Archer focuses the more powerful the attack becomes.

Class Overview- Priest

Happy Saturday, TERA Fans! This weekend, we're featuring the priest class description from the Official Korean website :]

This one seems to give quite a bit of information and even some lore, so personally I really liked it! No bias towards priests, or anything! :D

This description was originally translated by Meiellink into Japanese, then by Locien from Japanese to English and edited by me! Enjoy!

Priest
Receiving protection from the gods, Priests stay close to their allies to protect them.

This class has the ability to heal its allies and to debuff their enemies in order to make battle safer.

Priests use staves and are armed with divine magic to damage their enemies. They are considered very reliable by their allies. Priests who are protected and blessed by the god of justice Yuria, use their divine magic to heal wounded allies and curse their enemies to ensure the safety of themselves and their allies.

Priest Abilities

01. Light of Judgement
The Priest's basic long ranged attack.

02. Healing Wind
A close range healing spell which heals the priest and the allies in its proximity greatly.

03. Regenerating Wind
A middle range healing spell that regenerates the health of any allies in its range relatively fast. The priest however has to channel this spell and cannot move while it's active.

04. Shadow of Slumber
The priest fires a sphere which temporarily puts enemies it hits to sleep.

05. Mana Boost
Allows MP to recover quickly. However, if you get attacked during MP recovery,
you will lose the MP recovery status when you use another skill.

Hello CBT3?

After almost two months of little to no news, Bluehole posted a new teaser video on its official Korean website, possibly teasing that the 3rd Closed Beta is near. Included in the short trailer was a glimpse at the development process of the game, the sketches, ideas, map settings and more.
As opposed to the previous trailers where CGI and ingame footages were used, this trailer actually brings a breath of fresh air to the much hyped MMORPG. Of course, the date is still not set yet for the Closed Beta, but I guess gamers will not be lamenting since its supposed to be happening soon!

Class Overview- Warrior

Ello, TERA Fans! Today we're going to start presenting the translated class articles found on the Official Korean website. Hopefully we can learn a bit more about each class this way!

This article was originally translated by Meiellink into Japanese, then by Locien from Japanese to English and edited by me!

Today's class is the nimble and quick-thinking warrior, Enjoy!

Warrior

Warriors wield two swords, one in each hand which with they display daring swordplay on the battlefields while running very quickly. Warriors are highly dependent on their speed and quick judgment with which they attract their opponent's attention and confuse them in order to strike them.

Even though the swords that warriors carry are very light and deal little damage the they are still a force to be reckoned with. Warriors have the ability to attack continuously because of their impressive agility.

Warrior Abilities

1. Basic Attack
Strikes the opponent once. By continuously striking up to four times the damage
dealt increases by each hit.

2. Evasion
Allows the warrior to dodge an opponent's attack.

3. Sword Dance
Rapidly and elegantly strikes the opponent multiple times.

04. Concentrated Attack
The warrior focuses an attack on a narrow area which deals high damage.

Race Lore – The Humans

Good Afternoon, TERA Fans! This evening, we'll be sharing a very interesting translation, specifically if you appreciate lore! While the official English TERA site has a bit of information on the history of Arborea and its inhabitants, the official Korean website provides much more insight.

Every night this week, we'll be presenting a new translation from the race information pages of the official Korean site. Tonight, I'm proud to present the history of the determined and prosperous Humans of Arborea! Enjoy!

History of the Humans
For 2000 years, humans had to endure the Diaspora. To recover what they had lost in those 2000 years, they established themselves in an area of Arborea that was torn by a war of deities. The humans are upright, have good physical shape, and are full of confidence. However, no one believes humans will be the leading race of Arborea.

Humans have built the city of Velika which is now considered the center of civilization. They have driven away various monsters and creatures in Arborea to bring about peace, and created the Valkion Coalition, an alliance of advanced civilizations in Arborea.

Curse of Diaspora
The ancestors of the humans were jealous of their creators’ powers, and stole some possessions from the last of the creators, Gheed. Afterwards, Gheed found out who stole his precious possessions and killed them, but he did not stop there. He also put a curse on the whole human race, which spread throughout the land for 2000 years. The fact that humans have started to gather and civilize is only recent history.

Creation of The Valkion Coalition
The Valkion Coalition was created to prevent destruction caused by deities and to keep foreign races out. Its members are the civilized races in Arborea. This Valkion Alliance was created when it was suggested by Kiyon, who was one of the creators of Velika. To this day, this national alliance prevents foreign races from attacking the civilized races in Arborea.

Human

What other races think of Humans
“Even though humans are disrespectful and lack wisdom, they do communicate well.”

“I think highly of their willpower. When others have given up on something, they are still at it. Though, I think it’s sad that they aren’t the honest bunch and like to sit and talk instead of act.”

“Those filthy things are inferior to elves… even if they look like they care, all they think about is taking care of themselves. Its obvious they are jealous of us.”

“Humans? Yeah its great that they’re active and all, but they take everything for granted. Its too bad they use that activity to destroy nature.”

“Humans are great. They’ve done incredible things in such a short period of time, even though from our point of view they seem too eager to do things. But wouldn’t that be their advantage? We just hope that they look at the big picture and work with it."

Though I'd read before that the land of Arborea was war-torn, this article gives at least one catastrophe a name, The Dispora. It appears the Humans brought this upon themselves due to foolish actions, but came out of it victorious. This certainly characterizes them as very hardy and possibly as having the strength of gods.

This is the first time I have seen a deity mentioned in TERA lore as well, do you think all races worship the same creators? Do you think the creators play an active role in quests and dungeons?

Do you think the Valkion Coalition could have to do with the political systems we've been promised we'll see?

Tell me what you think, TERA Fans, and stay tuned for another translation tomorrow night!

Npc Poll Translation

As promised, this morning I'm happy to share with you a translation of some more recent news! On January 13th, the results of a poll were posted on the official Korean website. The poll was based on player's feelings about NPC's and their overall role in the world. On the tail end of the Western FGT, this is the latest development in Bluehole Studio's quest to shape the game around player feedback.

You can find the translated article below! You may be surprised at how similar some Korean ideas are to Western ideas, at least on this subject!

Hello everyone, this is LIME (a korean cm)

Thanks to everyone for participating in the poll that went on for last week.

We read through the suggestions and got to know how big of an expectation everyone has for TERA.

Non Player Characters
They tell many stories that TERA has, and will interact with you in many ways.

What do you want to see from NPCs in TERA?

1. Enhancing the storytelling in many ways
You have told us that you hope the NPCs will give you an idea of the state of the world in TERA, by hearing stories from the NPCs.

2. Social Motion from NPCs
Instead of just standing like a doll, users were hoping that the NPCs acted naturally. Also, users were hoping for not just actions, but facial expressions and being in certain places would give an idea of the NPCs personalities.

3. NPC Favor System
You have told us that NPCs becoming more friendly to you by doing quests would be a great idea. By completing special quests, giving presents, and other things, it would increase favor and give you a hidden quest or a special discount off merchandise.

4. Region, and Situation effect on NPCs
Users thought the landscape and situation (ie time) changing the way NPCs act or dress would be a good idea.

5. NPCs reacting to character situation
Many suggested that when giving a quest or talking to the character, NPCs acting differently due to progress in a quest or situation of the character, it would be more interesting. Talking to the NPC again after receiving a quest would give tips, and NPCs would give different greetings to the characteristics of your character.

6. "Don't know where he'd appear out of nowhere" type of NPCs
As a type of NPC that appears in various places in TERA, it could be an NPC that appears randomly in hunting grounds, giving special quests that ties into the story, or sell rare items.

7. In-game Minigame NPCs
Many suggested having NPCs that like playing with the character would make it more interesting.
Minigames, special monster summoning, or dueling with the NPC.

And not only that, people suggested having NPCs that fight with you, NPCs guarding, NPCs trading, NPCs catching illegal programs, and talking with the NPCs and others. These suggestions were good and helpful.

Thank you once again for giving opinions on our developing game TERA, and please give input on upcoming weekly polls.

Thank you.

Firstly, I feel that it's fantastic that these polls will be appearing weekly and that Bluehole is taking the time they are to gather player feedback and overall suggestions. I hope we see at least a few of these in the game at release!

Overall those polled are hoping to see very lively NPC's, characters that do more than just stand there and give quests. It seems that these players are hoping for a little more immersion, with NPC's helping your own personal character to become more involved in the existing lore and story. This is something that MMO players have discussed a lot in my experience, myself included!

Adding even some of these ideas could bring TERA up to an even more unique position. I can only imagine what it would be like to walk into Velika (the first city you can get to) and see a myriad of unique NPC's, each fitted with a clear personality, either scowling at you or welcoming you.

So what do you guys think? Are these ideas feasible for an MMO? Are they important? What do you think of all the feedback Bluehole is taking?
