TERAonline.it granted exclusive PvP interview with Brian Knox!

Good morning, TERA Fans! Recently, TERAonline.it was able to speak with Brian Knox about PvP in TERA. What resulted was an interesting Q&A, confirming a few aspects of PvP in TERA.

You can read the full interview here and a preview below, enjoy!

Quote

Q: Will the PVP system will be more oriented toward solo PVP, group PVP or mass PVP?

A: The most fitting answer to that question is really "all of the above." We set out to give players as much choice as possible when it comes to TERA’s PvP. Dueling is a basic feature of the game--anyone on any server can initiate or take part in a duel. Groups will inevitably come into conflict with one another both on large battlegrounds and in smaller-scale skirmishes. At higher levels, players will come into contact with other player groups more and more often, so at that point you’ll see a natural move toward group or mass PvP.

Q: In the past someone mentioned a “declaration of PVP” in PVP servers – how will this work?

A: We want to create a system that allows for full PvP freedom but discourages ganking. The declaration of PvP you’re referring to is something in the Korean version of the game that warns a PK target you’re about to kill them, which we actually removed in our first Focus Group Test to see how the game worked without it. It’s not quite perfect yet but we’re getting close.

TERA Focus Group Test 2 – Postmortem: Westernization

Good Evening, TERA Fans! Today, CM Scapes has posted another FGT2 Postmortem, this time concerning the westernization process TERA will go through.

This report goes through lengths to assure the western audience that the team is seriously looking at TERA's questing experience and working hard to ensure it meets the audience's expectations. They hope to improve the storyline told through questing and they want to ensure that questing is the most optimal way to level. They also mention fine-tuning the names of items and monsters for the western audience.

You can find the full report below! Enjoy!

Quote

Westernization

Perhaps the hottest topic of the FGT2 forum, the Westernization feedback category covered the gamut of story, dialogue, naming, game flow, and quests. Overall, testers commented positively on TERA’s Westernization and felt it was a strong indication of our goal for the final product. It's important to note that our Westernization efforts are nowhere near complete; as TERA proceeds through development, its Westernization will continue to be improved upon.

Testers found the core story intriguing and were excited to enter the world presented at the start of the game. Feeling involved in advancing the narrative through interaction with NPCs and engaging dialogue was important to the majority of participants: they wanted to feel that their character was pivotal to the game’s plot. Additionally, players wanted to experience more immersion through the exotic naming of items, skills, and other in-game elements to more closely match the colorful fantasy world of TERA.

We agree with our testers that the best way to convey the tale of TERA is through the quests and denizens of the world. An improved ratio of pertinent story quests to side missions will be introduced in future builds of the game. Also, we intend to polish the names of the equipment, NPCs, and monsters of the land to provide a more immersive experience.

Feedback on the game's flow was clear: playing through the Island of Dawn was a finely crafted experience, while adventuring beyond level 11 and the first major city required self-propelled exploration. Quests during the first 11 levels were easy to find and rewarding to complete. The feedback on later quest chains, however, showed that our testers sought better flow and rewards that scaled to match the increased difficulty levels. Participants agreed that quests were a viable method of leveling, and they would like even more dynamic and exciting quests. Some testers also reported that they were able to level well simply by killing monsters instead of accepting quests.

We want to make questing the optimal method of leveling. To that end, we're developing more than 1,000 quests and four times as many quest archetypes as were in FGT2. Additionally, we are evaluating and improving the geographic distribution of quests to ensure that the rewards scale to match the required level.

New Official Character Creation Video!

Good afternoon, TERA Fans! A new, official character creation video reveals previously unplayable racial genders and face sliders!

Check out En Masse's release below!

Quote

We wanted to share a new video that Bluehole Studio has produced showing changes being made to the TERA engine based on feedback from the recent Korean Open Beta Test 3 and Western Focus Group Test 2. One of the key pieces of feedback we received was the desire for more character customization and this video shows one of the upcoming enhancements to TERA that allows players to customize the unique look of their character: more facial feature options and feature sliders to allow for custom modification.

(If the video doesn't work for you, click here to watch it on youtube!)

The video depicts the character creation of all of the races, including the notable female Aman, male High Elves and female Popori! Does this mean that the next Korean beta and FGT3 will feature all race/gender combinations O:?

Throughout the quick video, it appears that a few different facial sliders are being used to tweak the character's appearances. As the video is in Korean, I am not sure what the sliders are each specifically for, but you can clearly see that they affect the eyes, mouth and other prominent facial features.

I personally am really glad they've added options to help make each character look a little more unique! The feature doesn't look too extensive, but it does look like just enough. I am also glad that though the character creator is quite nice, there is clearly more to the game than character creation, as the focus has always been on TERA's next generation gameplay!

What do you think, TERA Fans?

Ideas for Instances: Puzzles for Instance!

Threads from the official TERA forums and fansite forums may also be included in the Velika Guardian! Shortly after the second Focus Group Test ended, Focus Group Tester n00balisk posted a poll asking fellow community members their thoughts on what they would like to see in TERA's instanced game areas. The consensus of more than 170 votes was overwhelmingly in favor of being challenged to solve puzzles in addition to testing their mettle against boss monsters and their minions.

n00balisk goes on to suggest "the puzzles [could be] randomly generated each time you enter the instance. That way even if you are familiar with the puzzle it will be different each time you enter. This would keep each experience somewhat fresh! I think it would be great to have the puzzles require each person to play their part!"

Some major points of this first article were...

  • Levels 1-11 were well received.
  • Levels 12+ needed improvement.
  • More equipment options per level are planned, featuring new visuals and more statistics.
  • Class balance is being worked on.
  • The most popular classes were warrior and sorcerer.
  • The most popular races were Castanic, Aman, High Elf, and Popori.
  • Party play will be greatly improved.

TERA Focus Group Test 2
Postmortem: Gameplay

The overwhelming majority of players felt that levels 1 to 11 were well-balanced and provided a good introduction to TERA and its lore. However, feedback on levels 12 and onward was a lot more diverse. Some liked the pacing at those levels while others felt it needed improvement. We agree that there’s room to improve in this area and plan to add new quests in more centralized hubs.

Feedback regarding progression fell into four categories: equipment, items, skills, and gold acquisition. We asked testers whether they felt they received real and tangible rewards for their efforts, and feedback followed many of the same trends for each of the three categories. Gear was a hot topic: moving forward, TERA will feature more equipment items per level, new visuals for these items, and a wider assortment of item statistics. Gold seemed to be just about right, although testers noted that it was hard to tell for sure without a live, in-game economy.

The focus test results revealed that classes will need additional balancing in order to create distinct roles in parties while allowing solo play. In this early version of TERA, the most popular classes were warriors and sorcerers. Favorite races on the other hand varied widely, with the most popular being Aman, Castanic, High Elf, and Popori. The FGT2 game client limited the number of available race and class combinations, and testers indicated that they wanted more variety in this area. In future builds of TERA, your characters will enjoy more customization options, including additional race and class combinations.

Party play comments fell into three categories: incentives, bonuses, and finding a party. In one poll, 92% of testers experienced party play. Testers agreed that grouping and its social aspect are important elements of massively multiplayer online games. The focus test also confirmed that party play needs work; we’ll be making a number of improvements to the grouping system to make grouping more beneficial for players.

TERAHispano.com Interview + Curse Launches SC2 Map Hosting!

Good Afternoon, TERA Fans! Recently, TERAHispano.com had the chance to interview En Masse Entertainment COO Patrick Wyatt about security in TERA and TERA productor Sam Kim about TERA gameplay. It's a pretty great interview and you can find a portion of the interview below.

Check out the full interview here @ TERAHispano.com!

Quote

Concerning security on TERA, answered by En Masse Entertainment COO Patrick Wyatt:

Greetings from TeraHispano.com, Pat! First of all thanks a lot for your time and for answering our interview questions. How is everything at the moment in the TERA camp?

Thanks for the opportunity to talk to TeraHispano’s fans, Nestor. It has been busy at En Masse Entertainment over the last few months. When we opened the Seattle office in November last year there were only four of us, but we’ve grown dramatically since then--we have 32 people working at En Masse! Now that we’ve brought aboard so many talented people, we’re making preparations for the launch of TERA.

Our most recent effort was preparing for the second Focus Group Test. Unlike a beta test, where users are playing a mostly-complete game and providing feedback about hardware compatibility and server scalability, the Focus Group Test gave several hundred users the chance to play the game early enough in the development process that the dev team will be able to listen to their feedback and then make substantive changes to the game.

I´ve read a lot about your point of view about MMOs security. Let’s talk about this first. Gold farmers and game-fraudsters earn about 1-10 billon dollars annually. With TERA in the eyes of a lot of people (and growing) I think you should know TERA will be focused by these "cybercriminals". Are you conscious of this?

We’re very much aware of the problems caused by cybercriminals in other online games; given the enormous amount of money that they can generate by gold farming and stealing game accounts, then selling game gold for real-world money, it’s no surprise that they’re already looking into TERA. While their interest does validate the growing excitement for our game, we know that online crime is a critically important problem to solve, and that we have to do much more than other game publishers have done in the past. Players have already seen that simply pulling out the “ban-hammer”—as publishers have done for many other games—is an ineffective solution.

We have a lot of work to do to ensure that our game has a high-quality play environment free from chat-spam, account theft, purchase fraud, phishing, scamming, and all the other nasty behaviors that criminals use to make money. We don’t have these mechanisms in place yet because we’ve been focused on creating an excellent gameplay experience first. That said we know it is a critical area for us to innovate before we launch to ensure that gamers have a great experience playing TERA. Just so no one gets alarmed by that statement, we won’t be using GameGuard or its like.

Lancer

Click the images to make them larger!

TERA-Online.com said:

Lancers wield the largest weapons and the largest defenses. Stalwart defenders, unstoppable like the incoming tide, their lances give them long reach in combat, while they shield weaker party members from enemy attacks.

Lancers are “stoic guardians” able to take damage, but also able to dish it out when the situation requires. Despite being a relatively slow class due to their predisposition to prefer blocking to dodging, the Lancer is nevertheless able to focus damage very precisely. This allows them to excel in single combat, though they are also able to drop their defenses and charge into the battle to scatter smaller foes from the field as necessary. They are the center of every battle, protecting allies and bolstering defenses, all while dealing devastating blows to unsuspecting opponents.

Class Skills

Combo Attack

Assigned to the left mouse button by default, Combo Attack is a starting skill, and one that is used frequently. The nature of the lance ensures that the Combo Attack is very narrowly focused, allowing the Lancer to attack a single enemy with great precision. Typically the Lancer will strike normally three times, and then perform a more powerful thrust on the fourth attack. When groups of enemies crowd the front of the Lancer, Combo Attack enables the Lancer to strike multiple enemies at once in a straight line. The best strategy for ensuring this condition is attracting a group's attention, and then moving back slightly, so that they charge at you in a group. One attack and they immediately regret their impetuosity!

Shield Block

Shield Block is perhaps the staple of the Lancer class, allowing them to heavily mitigate damage, transforming a foe's powerful assault into a harmless tap. By default, Shield Block is assigned to the "C" key, and must be held down in order to maintain the stance. The Lancer must be facing in the direction from which the attack is coming. Doing so will heavily reduce the amount of damage taken by the Lancer. This ability works equally well defending against magical as well as ranged attacks. With an instant casting time, this ability allows the Lancer to react quickly to each creature's "tells", rewarding the Lancer with an eye for sensing incoming attacks.

Ferocious Charge

Ferocious Charge is the perfect tool for breaking that stalemate, charging out of an unpleasant situation, or for mauling multiple foes all at once. The Lancer leans forward and charges in the direction they were facing when the charge was initiated. This produces a barrage of strikes against any enemies in the Lancer's path. While the damage for these multiple strikes is relatively low when taken individually, they cumulatively produce a significant amount of carnage. During the final seconds of the charge, the Lancer unleashes several powerful blows, following through with the entire strike by fully extending the arm and thrusting the lance through the last of their foes. This ability is most effective when initiating a fight, charging into groups of enemies, or when an enemy is knocked down and unable to respond.

Riposte

Riposte, earned at level six, is an incredibly useful "passive" skill that allows the Lancer to counter-attack each time they emerge from the Shield Block ability. Once a Lancer has successfully initiated Shield Block (and hopefully put an end to an enemy's attack), the Lancer may counter-attack by using their Combo Attack while still blocking. This results in the Lancer bashing the enemy with their shield, and then stepping through for a powerful thrust immediately afterward. This skill is especially useful for maintaining the Lancer's momentum in combat, allowing them to seamlessly transition between attacking and blocking.

Roar of Defiance

Roar of Defiance, acquired at level ten, is the Lancer's first "aggro" ability. When activated, the Lancer unleashes a roar which attracts the attention of surrounding enemies. The range of this ability is large enough to allow the Lancer to capture the notice of fairly distant enemies. In addition, the Roar affects the Lancer's surroundings in a full circle, allowing them to dominate the battle from its center. This is the Lancer's primary means of protecting group members from unwanted attention by monsters, in addition to the Shield Block ability. The relatively low cooldown requirement means that the Lancer is able to continuously maintain the hate of their enemies throughout the battle.

Posted Image

High Level Skills

While the skills received during the first ten levels represent the Lancer's core functionality, the later skills involve significantly more utility, permitting the Lancer to further find their niche within the group.

An often frustrating experience for a young Lancer is being taken unaware and knocked down in a fight, unable to initiate Shield Block. The Soaring Attack ability remedies this nicely, allowing a Lancer to quickly rise from the ground and get back into the battle with a strong counter-attack. Though only usable every twelve seconds, this ability lets the Lancer respond that much faster to enemy attacks, which is essential when a second's hesitation may be the difference between a successful block or certain death. While the Lancer's powerful strikes are often enough to knock down opponents as a matter of course, the ability Shield Bash allows them to take advantage of this situation more accurately. Using this ability on an enemy and then rushing in with Ferocious Charge is often enough to frighten the staunchest of opponents. At level twenty the Lancer is provided with the Noose ability, which allows the Lancer to pull enemies to them from a significant distance. Importantly, the range of this ability is fifty percent greater than that of Roar of Defiance, allowing the Lancer to have even further control over events on the battlefield.

Thus far, most of the Lancer's abilities have directly impacted the battlefield either by damaging opponents with powerful attacks, or by controlling enemies by drawing their animosity and/or the monster itself. However, at level twenty-six the Lancer is granted its first debuff, Crash Gear. This ability reduces an enemy's armor, allowing both the Lancer and their party to deal increased damage for ten seconds. It is important to note that this ability can be stacked up to three times on the same opponent for each successive attack after Crash Gear is applied. Getting in those attacks is certainly doable for an attentive Lancer, and even more so when activated with allies nearby! Moving up to level thirty, this trend of granting the Lancer group-friendly abilities continues. Aura of Inspiration places a buff on group members which increases their defense by fifteen percent. The fact that this Aura does not affect the Lancer is very flavorful, further heightening the Lancer's persona as the stalwart defender of their party. Granted at level thirty-six, the Lancer receives a second "aggro" ability called Infuriate. The primary difference between Infuriate and the similar ability Roar of Defiance seems to be one of degree. Infuriate has a significantly longer cooldown cost. However, the name of this ability seems to indicate that the hate generated by this skill is also significantly improved over the more frequently used, but less powerful Roar. This skill enables the Lancer to take charge of a chaotic battlefield, ensuring that the attention of surrounding enemies is securely focused on them, once again protecting their party from sure death!
