Archer Column: Reap Mob Basics

Archer Column: Reap Mob Basics

Hey folks! Cala takes a break this week we so can take a look at some of the tactics she used in Chapter 7, as well as some other basic principles of Archer gameplay. I won't be looking at skills specifically, but tactics that an archer will need to become intimately acquainted with very quickly after setting foot on the Isle of Dawn. I'll outline how to handle those pesky little clusters of mobs, as well as the bigger 'medium' sized mobs, and the variety of ways you can spell their doom.

Ok, so you're running around on the Isle of Dawn, you've popped a few Ghilliedhu, learned a couple new skills, and have made your way to the Expeditionary Supply Base (the one Cala is almost at). Outside of here, you'll notice Terons, groups of small earth spirits bent on your destruction – should you choose to pester them, and let's face it, you will! In an early article by EME, these mob clusters were referred to as Reap mobs, presumably because you swoop in just reap their little lootz.

Attacking a cluster of Reap mobs means one thing, a LOT of hate directed at you. If you've played an archer class in other games before, you may have had times when you accidentally stole aggro from the tank, or you may yourself have 'evade-tanked' on occasion. Archers in TERA are NOT tanks. I can't stress this enough. You won't be able to sustain a beating, meaning you won't be standing in the center of a cluster of Reap mobs letting them wail on you while you pick them off one by one. With the exception of Multi-Shot, and the post Isle of Dawn Penetrating Shot, you WILL be picking off mobs one at a time.

In every cluster of Reap mobs, you'll notice one who stands out a little taller, a little bolder, perhaps even a little more rude than the rest. This fella will be the one calling the shots. He'll be the one saying “Oh, what have we here guys, fresh meat!” and getting his followers to trun on you... He'll be the one granting buffs to the little buggers, and he'll also be the one tapping into the Titan's dream to replace the reap mobs you've previously dispatched! Clearly, there is reason to take the leader out first. My recommendation: unless the little guys are arranged in such a perfect ball and you can't resist opening with an AoE to watch them fly, open with a powerful attack on the leader first, and take him out fast.

TERA's archer class is all about evasion, just not the evasion you are used to in stat-based combat systems. You won't be auto-dodging any attacks, and you won't dodge better even if you did have an evasion stat, which you don't. You're dodging comes from your keyboard and mouse. Kiting and dodging are going to be your bread and butter, and the more proficient you become at this, the more challenging the obstacle you can overcome.

Two things to remember while kiting:
1.)Be aware of your surroundings! It won't help you to survive longer if you have a half dozen mobs on you and you run blindly into another pack of Reap mobs! Sure individually they might not hit hard, but when you have a bunch on you, things can get hairy!
2.)Kiting doesn't do damage, your bow does! Leave enough room between yourself and the mobs that every few seconds you can turn, fire, and keep running.

Kiting Reap mobs is not only your best option for survival, it's also an extremely efficient way of massing the critters into a 'chain' or 'ball', which makes your AoE (Rain of Arrows, Arrow Shower) or linear attacks (Penetrating Shot) more effective. If you were standing your ground, taking a beating, and firing your bow for all you are worth, a few things would happen. First, you would be having to swivel about to find a target, since they tend to surround you. Second, you'd run out of mana because you are simply popping shots off full tilt. Archers have the smallest mana pool of all the mana wielding classes, and it gets empty very quickly. Of course, it fills very quickly too, but not if you aren't giving it a chance to. Kiting – taking a couple steps, turning, then firing, repeat – allows time for your mana to replenish itself between shots, so you won't need to worry about hearing that dreaded 'out of mana' sound.

In Chapter 7, Cala balled them up by kiting, forced them into approaching a cliff, put them betwixt her and the cliff, then sent them flying. You can do this too! When you get Backstep (the basic Archer dodge skill, also known as Caelixian's FAVORITEST SKILL EVER!) you will be able to do some pretty slick and tricksy maneuverings to grant yourself the advantage. Train the Reaps towards the cliff. Once they are upon you, quickly turn your back on them, facing the cliff, and hit backstep. Waste no time charging your penetrating shot, and unleash it at the ball. Feel free to snicker at their pathetic little screams; chances are they would if it had been you going over! Knockback won't be very viable for an Archer in PVP, (the physics are excellent – a heavy target won't do much flying, but the little ones will!) but you can still use Backstep to quickly get behind your foe for a chance to knock them down. All of your back-attacks have a chance to knock down your target, so try to score them as often as you can. Oh, while we're on the topic, IF you score a knockdown in PVP, resist the temptation to approach the target, or continue attacking and use the opportunity to put a bit more distance between it and you, or charge up a powerful attack for big numbers.

There you have it, a Reap mob primer with minimal side-tracks. Hope this helps those of you who are only just dreaming of getting your hands on an archer, and find yourselves on the Isle of Dawn in the very same scenario as Cala!

TeraBow Archer Q&A – Part #2

Hey, TERA Fans! TERABow.com has published a part II to their Q&A with CM Scapes! Check it out below or at TERABow.com and if you missed Part One you can read it over here!

*** TeraBow Archer Q&A - Part #2 ***

The first one is from a TeraBow member Methallor: I read on the official forums that Archers have the second highest base defense in the game - only beaten by the Lancer (and only by two points) and are one point higher than the Beserker. Can we find out if this is true or not? I find it hard that a class built on range would need such high defence...

Bear in mind that this information is based on preliminary balancing in developmental builds. We’ll provide more reliable specifics on class statistics as TERA nears a release state.

Second is from another TeraBow member, Coeus: How long does it take to cast archer traps? Are they visible by others or only group members?

Currently, archer traps take approximately three seconds to cast. However, like all skills, this is still in development, and it’s highly likely to change as a result of skill balancing. Ultimately, traps will be visible to party members—but invisible to other players—to increase their usefulness in gameplay.

(( this can be coupled in with another question about Traps: Traps appear to play a vital role in any Archer style class, how are they being implemented in Tera? WoW had a time period on their traps which required the player to consistently replace them or catch them before they expired. Will this be the case in Tera? ))

Traps do indeed form an important part of an archer’s arsenal, making the archer more versatile (and deadly) in a party and making solo play more dynamic and varied. The duration of active traps is not yet finalized.

Continuing with the traps, DarkAlexF posted a great idea on the official forums about a trap that could be activated by an arrow shot, or benefit arrow shots. Similar to Braveheart where they put oil on the field then shot a single fire arrow to set the field ablaze? An oil trap for example , that could be activated by a close range fire arrow. OR if the opponent steps over it before activated, he becomes "combustible", thus making you able to use a fire arrow effectively against him. Do you have any plans for such traps or variations of? (From thread: TERA - The Next Generation MMO :: Forums)

Basically, how much can you tell us about Traps. Archers are dying to know!

Whether we’ll see the oil trap you describe remains to be seen, as the archer skillset is still in development. Traps that reduce a target’s defenses or resistances are completely feasible.

The third from TeraBow members is from Hornbury and asks Will Archers have it easier? I highly doubt any company would have one class easier than all the rest, so instead, could you perhaps share one aspect where the Archer might require the assistance of others to complete something? Something that we can't do solo?

All of TERA’s classes will be able to solo to maximum level, but there will be some difficult challenges; for example, some monsters will require a very high degree of skill to take down on one’s own. This is just one scenario where having defenders and healers to complement the archer’s damage output will make victory easier to attain.

Moulded from DarkAlexF's comment on the Official Forum- Is there any way to customize your maximum range, even if at the cost of a other things aspects. So like, you could choose between attack speed and max range.

Maximum attack range is determined by the skill you’re using. While you could feasibly focus on using skills that place you at a certain distance from your target, we don’t have plans to allow for manual adjustment of the ratio between attack range and attack speed.

Tjuba on the Official Forums - Currently I feel that the Archer class feel a bit too spammy and thus do not appeal so much as the melee classes. Any feedback on this concern?

If by “spammy” you’re referring to excessive use of a single skill, rest assured that the developers are working to ensure that the archer class features a range of dynamic abilities, and effectively combining and executing them against foes will require enough skill to present a continuous challenge.

Geno on TeraFans - if i fire the multi-shot (the one where u select 4 targets for the arrows) is it possible to set all the arrows to hit one target? or is there a limit to one at a time?

No, the multiple-target skill you describe cannot be stacked on a single target.

In our previous Q&A, Brian mentioned "Archer skills are more dependent on the distance to the target's hit box. It's critical that a group have a strategy to pin down a monster so the archer can maximize damage." Does this mean Archers are required to be at max distance in order to do max damage? What happens if we fire "too close"? The Beserker interview mentioned how only the blade does damage and standing too close can make you miss, do Archers face a similar problem?

The archer’s range from the target does not affect skill damage. Brian’s quote refers to the mobile nature of monsters: it’s much easier to stay in range of a stationary target than to take aim at a moving one! The lost time and energy spent on even a few missed charge-based skills may ultimately lead to the party’s defeat. It’s also important to note that there isn’t a “dead space” between an archer and target where attacks cannot be executed if the archer isn’t a minimum distance away. However, trying to keep a melee-ranged foe in your crosshairs is harder than it sounds, particularly when it’s knocking you to the floor with its attacks!

TERA’s Demo Booth

Posted Image

Hey, TERA Fans!

Today has been a very fun day! I was lucky enough to be able to experience TERA's demonstration booth, which was absolutely fantastic. Me and four other lucky testers all had computers equipped with Razer gear and 40-ish inch monitors waiting for us upon stepping into the booth. Each computer had a different race and class selected on the character screen and I sat at the TeraFans Wiki - CastanicCastanic TeraFans Wiki - Sorcerersorcerer one!

Sam Kim instructed us to put on the headphones which were at each station and then he went around introducing each class available to us. Once that was done, we were to click "play" and begin the fun! Our characters arrived, partied and in a zone called TeraFans Wiki - Mistmoar IslandMistmoar Island . Our group consisted of a warrior, slayer, berserker, sorcerer and a priest, which Sam Kim played. As we moved into hostile territory, Mr. Kim mentioned that the game currently has 80 zones.

We began to fight some monsters, Mr. Kim pointing out the strengths and abilities of each class as we went along. The party gameplay in TERA was really incredibly fun and the monsters got a little harder as we went along. Eventually we got to the boss, who's name I can't remember and prepared for a truly epic fight. While I'm sure Mr. Kim is a great producer, he had some difficulty healing! He died at least three times and we were all united in cheering and laughter as we attempted to kill the boss. At Mr. Kim's last death, however, we just couldn't make it. In a last attempt to save the attempt, I kited the boss for an epic 40 seconds or so before it finally one shotted me!

It was really a great experience. The game is so beautiful, action-packed and fun. If this is the view all of the media is getting, the game should surely garner a fantastic reputation as E3 press starts rolling out.

Check back in a bit to read my interview with Brian Knox!
