CBT 1 begins in half an hour!

Update: Some players are experiencing queue times. To compensate for this, once those players get in-game they gain an experience buff that lasts as long as they were in the queue (up to 60 minutes.)

Also, Dragonfall was having stability issues, so a new server, Serpentis Isle, was added.

Korean Open Beta Information

The Korean Open Beta begins today and TERA Fans is all set to be your source for beta news! The test has yet to begin and even so we already have lots of information. While you wait for the test to begin, let's recap what we know. Keep reading to find out more and check back often for updates!

General KOBT Information

The KOBT (Korean Open Beta Test) is the first TERA test open to the general Korean public. The test comes after three closed beta tests and a closed server stress test. Players were able to make their characters, join a guild and add friends during an OBT pre-selection period beginning on December 30th and ending on January 8th. During this time, servers were capped at around 5,000 players per-server and 27 servers in total were opened. After the launch of the test, the servers will re-open for new character creation.

The KOBT is set to begin on:

  • January 11, 2011 at 6 AM Korean time
  • January 10, 2011 at 9 PM GMT
  • January 10, 2011 at 4 PM EST
  • January 10, 2011 at 1 PM PST

The test is to last two weeks. Players will be able to reach level 38, but at launch, the level cap will be 50, according to Korean news source, TIG. There have been no announced launch dates for TERA in any region so far.

Hangame released a totally awesome trailer following the announcement of TERA's OBT. You can check it out in HQ below!

It's worth mentioning that although the trailer displays the political system and battlefields, these activities seem to be strictly endgame and will not be testable during the OBT. Not including the start zone, the Isand of Dawn, there will only be one continent open for testing, Southern Arun.

TERA Fans in the KOBT

Many members of the TERA Fans community will be playing in the KOBT. The majority of us have decided to use Korean names in order to more seamlessly blend in during the test and not possibly be targeted by Korean GMs. Our guild is called TERA팬 (TERA Fans) and we are located on 미스텔 (Mystel). The GM for this test is 이알라 (Yialra), but I am currently planning a TERA Fans community guild for the NA launch of the game.

For more information on TERA팬, head over to our thread where we have a roster and vent information.

KOBT FAQ

Here are some frequently asked KOBT questions answered. If you have a KOBT question not addressed somewhere in this thread, please ask it in the comments!

  • How do I get into the beta?
You have to make a Hangame account. This requires a Korean social security number, so you must be a Korean citizen. Another legal way of getting into the test is by having a Korean press account. There are other, illegal ways of getting into the test, but we can't allow you to discuss those methods on TERA fans.

  • I have an account. Do I need a proxy to overcome an IP ban?
    Not at this time.

  • Will the test be in English at all?
No, it is a Korean test, entirely in the Korean language. Any attempts at an English "fan patch" may be a violation of the game's EULA.

However, diligent TERA Fans have been working to translate some aspects of the game on the forums. There are some translated maps up right now. You can also just hang out in the KOBT Vent :) (Info here)

  • How do I type in Korean?
TERA Fans member Reiko has graciously made a guide to typing Hangul into TERA.

    Quote

Okay, from my experience you CAN NOT COPY PASTE FROM OUTWARD SOURCES (such as google translator) into the Tera Client.

    However there IS a workaround....

What I was told by my Korean friend is that the devs are closely monitoring and asking people on Hangame's site to report ALL ENGLISH SPEAKERS as well as anyone with an english name. The best way to avoid being reported is to follow my steps below:

    1. Start-> Control Panel-> Clock, Language, and Region
    2. Under Regional and Language Options click change keyboard or other input methods
    3. Change Keyboards…-> Add-> Korean (Korea)-> Keyboard-> Microsoft (IME) -> OK
    Posted Image

    4. Apply-> OK
    5. You have the option to show the language bar or hide it, you can also drag it to your start bar (it is small and simple to switch between.)

    6. You can type in Korean now! To switch back from Korean-English or English-Korean you can
    a) hold onto [alt] and [shift] together to switch the languages
    b) or click on the icon

    7. Typing in Korean is a bit compicated so make sure the Korean language bar look like this:

    Posted Image

    8. Here is a quick guide to type Korean letters on your keyboard:

    9. Let’s try writng Dong Bang Shin Ki in Korean:
    e+h+d= 동
    q+k+d= 방
    t+l+s= 신
    r+l= 기

    e+h+d+q+k+d+t+l+s+r+l= 동방신기

    10. If you wish to remove the Korean language keyboard, repeat 1-3, instead of add, click remove

TERA Fans KOBT Threads

There's tons of KOBT information in threads started by TERA Fans members all over the site! Here's a few of the most relevant ones:

I'll update the above list with more threads as they're made!

FGT2 Details

Good Afternoon, TERA Fans! Just a few minutes ago, BrotherMagneto on the official forums posted a thread about everything you fans need to know about FGT2!

The official post can be found here, but I've organized the most important facts below:

Quote

Schedule

  • The Focus Group Test will run from Friday, April 16 through Monday, April 19. The server will only be available at the following times:

  • Friday: 12pm–10pm PDT (7pm–5am UTC)
  • Saturday: 7am–10pm PDT (2pm–5am UTC)
  • Sunday: 7am–10pm PDT (2pm–5am UTC)
  • Monday: 12pm–10pm PDT (7pm–5am UTC)
  • Tuesday: TDB based on player progress

  • Invitations for FGT2 will go out Monday, April 12, with instructions on how to download and install the TERA client, as well as a list of PC requirements required to run the test. FGT participants will have from that time until the start of the test on Friday to download and install the client and any necessary updates.

  • FGT2 will cover approximately levels 1–25 of the game. FGT participants will be asked for both general and specific points of feedback about the game. They will be under an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), and will have access to a section of the TERA forum where they can post their notes and discuss the FGT with other users.

  • Check your spam filters and junk mail folders for emails about FGT2 if you don’t see one by Tuesday, April 13.

Feedback Matters

We’ve talked a lot about the Westernization process and how the Focus Group Tests fit into our work at En Masse, but we wanted to discuss a few specifics of exactly how this works. Focus Group Tests are not Beta tests, which are designed to look for bugs, hardware issues, and gameplay problems. Focus Group Tests are (like their name implies) more about testing audience reaction to specific things in the game—in our case, the lore, plot, and story we’ve worked on as part of our work at En Masse, and its overall effect on the world. There will be issues with the game, and things we know aren’t great or are in need improvement—that’s why we’re looking for feedback, after all!

Posted Image

Changes to the game in reaction to FGT1 Feedback!

  • General improvements to the movement, speed, controllability, and combat damage.

  • Improvements to the player trading system, and the implementation of a brokerage system for selling items.

  • Future implementation of controller support. You’ve seen the initial stages of this running on the version of TERA we had at GDC. The FGT2 build won’t support native controller use, but players will have the option to try controller support through third-party software such as Pinnacle Game Profiler. Future builds of TERA will support native controllers.

  • Players can now purchase Stamina if they don’t want to hang out around campfires to restore Stamina.

  • The ability to jump, swim and climb was added to the game.

  • Fall damage was significantly reduced.

This Focus Group Test will again look at several specific game mechanics, the overall lore and fiction, and additional questions on an ad-hoc basis.

You asked, here are the answers!

Good Evening, TERA Fans! A few weeks ago, I asked you to give us your questions to ask the TERA team at GDC and tonight I have the answers! While many of these questions have been answered since that time in the mass Q&A's Scapes and Brother Magneto have bee doing on the official forums, some are certainly still valid questions.

Thanks so much to En Masse Entertainment's Brian Knox for his time! Enjoy!

Gameplay

1. Are there any plans to add more equipment slots, like capes or helmets?

We're taking feedback from the FGTs and Beta tests into consideration, and this is something that people have repeatedly requested. Watch for more information about this in the near future!

2. Will there be any way for players to customize the look of their armor?

Again, we've seen a good deal of feedback about this from tests. We'll be adding additional armor with more variety, and we'll get more specific about this in the future.

3. What can you tell us about the mount system?

The mount system is still under development, but we want to make it a milestone in your characters' progression. We want the mount to be fast and exciting for players, and we're working on the exact balance and speed increase right now.

4. What can you tell us about the political system?

The political system will shape each server's community in a new and unique way. We'll discuss this more as we approach launch.

5. Are pets (both combat and non-combat) being developed for TERA?

We can't really talk about pets yet, but we've got several options on the table.

6. Will there be large scale siege warfare in TERA? If so, what is the plan to optimize this content in terms of avoiding lag?

Right now our focus is on PvE content and character balance. We have battlegrounds for users to participate in PvP combat—and, of course, on the PvP servers, players will be able to participate in large-scale conflicts between opposing guilds.

7. Players were concerned by the strength of knockbacks in TERA. Are there any plans to make it so that players can get themselves out of a knockback status?

We've already added skills that jump players out of a knockback status. For example, warriors can spin up from being knocked down and cause damage to all enemies surrounding them as they do so!

8. Will quests follow a dynamic and interesting storyline? What can you tell us about the story of TERA?

TERA's main storyline is revealed as your character progresses through the game. As you take on quests and interact with NPCs, you learn more about the world's lore and experience deeper and deeper layers of the story. We'll discuss lore in more detail in the coming weeks, so keep an eye on our website!

9. When leveling, will players be able to choose between several different zones with quests and mobs for their level range?

Yes. This helps give players a choice in content, and also adds a high level of replay value.

10. Will there be flying mounts included at any time? (Not including the taxi service, flying mounts that players control!)

There are no plans for flying mounts at this time.

11. What can players expect from TERA's end-game content?

Tera's endgame will involve the full spectrum of things you expect from an MMO, including battling in dungeons with PvE instances; taking to the battlegrounds to fight for honor; working the economy with crafting, enchanting, and playing the market. In addition, players will be able to influence the history of each server by participating in the in-game political system. TERA also understands the importance of alternate characters, so you will see some goodies for the altaholics out there!

Misc.

1. Will TERA receive global updates? Will there be a delay across different versions of the game?

It is every developer's dream to have a global simultaneous release, which minimizes a ton of work in supporting different branches of code, but there's also the reality of localization time. We will work to minimize this delta as much as possible, because it benefits everyone.

2. Will TERA support add-ons?

Right now our focus is not on UI but on the action in the middle of the screen. We're looking into ways of supporting fan contributions to TERA, but we haven't decided on anything concrete yet.

3. What measures will En Masse Entertainment take against players using third-party programs and buying/selling in-game currency?

We believe that security is an essential aspect of any successful game, and equally as important as game balance or the combat system.
We have a ton of things planned to help us stay ahead of the criminals looking to ruin the game experience, but we recognize that it will be an ongoing fight.

4. Are there any plans to include a specifically-tagged roleplaying server at launch?

A roleplaying server is something we'll consider, but hopefully players will take it upon themselves to roleplay their characters, regardless. 

5. Will TERA launch with an Oceanic server?

This is something we'll consider closer to launch.

6. Will the NA and EU servers be released at the same time?
This is our current plan, yes.

7. Will TERA release with 24-7 in-game customer support?

We will have customer service staff available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

8. How many betas are planned for the West? How will beta keys be made available?

There will be a few rounds of Beta tests planned for the West on various scales. We'll let the community know about availability of Beta keys when we're a little closer to starting them. Our fans will definitely be the first people we think of when we're handing out our Beta keys!

9. Can you explain what the exact difference between PvP and PvE servers will be in TERA?

PvP servers will allow for open world PvP; when you're out in the field, you're at risk. PvE servers limit that risk to consensual activities like duels, battlegrounds, and some other neat features we're working on. (Those consensual activities are available on PvP servers, too.)

Two more Q & A’s from the TERA Team!

Good evening, TERA Fans! Tonight, En Masse Entertainment's BrotherMagneto has posted a new Q&A with questions taken directly from the official forums. You can find it below!

Original Post: http://www.tera-online.com/forums/showpost.php?p=33528&postcount=187

Quote

You had questions? We've got answers! Here's the next round from us, the last until after GDC. We'll probably start a new thread then to help keep things simple.

In terms of PVP: we know a lot of you are asking about details on this, and (for reasons I hope are evident) we've consolidated our reply into a single response.

How does PVP work?
A: PVP will be on a sever-by-server basis, meaning that players who chose to participate in PVP may do so but those who do not, will not be required to play on severs that allow PVP. There are no predetermined factions in TERA, but we expect guilds to come into conflict with each other and PVP will be one way that conflict is expressed. Since we're still making adjustments based on feedback from the FGTs and Beta tests, we'll share further details on PVP in the future.

Will High Elves be able to have red hair?
A: The High Elves (and other races) are exploring new hairdressers and colorists.

Are there any available entry-level or internship positions available with En Masse?
A: Visit http://www.enmasse.com and click Careers to browse our available positions.

Are you taking action against people who leaked material covered under NDA?
A: We take leaks very seriously and will take action as appropriate.

Is there a date yet for a FGT or Beta for us anytime soon?
A: Stay tuned after GDC!

Is it going to be like the Korean one with 20k testers and stress test? I'm really concerned about the status of our beta tests.
A: We'll be testing many things during future betas, including stress tests.

Will the next FGT run on the same client and game data as the third closed beta in Korea?
A: No.

Is there really no chance the game is going to be released in 2010?
A: We'd rather take a little extra time to make sure the game is great than rush the game to market.

That's it for this round, see you after GDC!

Enjoy and have a great night!
