Mystic Column: Justice friends, assemble!

Posted Image

On November 19th, TERAblah was able to finally get some information out of En Masse regarding, what some might call the best class, the Mystic! Some questions that everyone wanted to know about were answered, and some questions we already knew to be true were also answered.

In the interview with Brain Knox at PAX, TERA Fans was able to clarify whether the Mystic class can really be considered a pet class or not. Now we know, thanks to various interviews, that not only are they summons, but short-duration allies. The tanking summon and damage dealing summon attack the last mob the player has hit and the healing summon only heals the Mystic and has the shortest duration.

We also now know that the summons are not player controlled, but AI guided, and the summons will have constant, generic names, and no mater what race a player plays, all the summons will look simmer when they are summoned. En Masse also states that the summons are skills which can be upgraded once a player meets the upgrade requirements.

I am also planing on asking En Masse some questions about the Mystic class, in our very first Mystic class interview! I would like everyone to chip in, even if you are not planing on play a Mystic. If you have a question that you would like to see answered, you can either leave a reply to the thread, or PM me with the question.

The Warrior Word

Hello TERA Fans! I'm Rishea and I'll be your Warrior columnist! (Better late than never, right? Hehe!) Ever since I played the first test with Amira, I fell in love with the Warrior class and I hope to meet the expectations of the other Warriors here!

Since I played for the first time, it seems like this class has been given so many options as far as play style. You can be straight DPS or an evasion tank of sorts. The potential is endless!

For those of you who may not have explored Warriors yet, they're a dual-wielding, fast paced melee DPS class. Their attacks aren't as hard-hitting as classes like the Berserker or the Slayer, but after several hits in succession, they can do devastating damage. They also have abilities to dodge incoming attacks and knock down or even stun enemies to help tanks or their cloth-wearing allies. Recently, they've been given the option to be a tanky sort of class since they're able to hold aggro well with their attacks and dodge to avoid damage. With the help of glyphs and crystals, there are tons of options depending on how you want to play! Warriors are very versatile!

Also with the new Combo system given to Warriors, as a tank or a DPS, you can deal large amounts of damage. This is a fresh way to play a class so players aren't stuck in a typical tanking role. As a DPS, it keeps things fun since there are several different combos that can be used. Perhaps depending on the situation, you may need to use different combos, but since the interface makes it easy to know which ability is available next, it takes away the hassle of trying to remember which abilities come after what.

I'm looking forward to being your Warrior columnist and seeing what new ideas and theorycrafting is to come with this great class! Farewell for now, TERA Fans!

Female Popori Re-Named Elin

Posted Image

The official Popori description on TERA-Online.com seems to have recently been edited to state that the proper name for "female Popori" is actually "Elin". It also grants some insight into how the Popori race was created. (Okay, okay, so I was wrong. That once.)

The first edit I've noticed is in the first sentence where it is clarified that the umbrella term "Popori" describes two types of nature spirits, the Popori (males) and the Elin (females).

The sentence also seems to state that the Elin "raised the Popori into consciousness" and this is further clarified in the second paragraph. It seems that the Elin were first created by the goddess Elinu herself and that the Elin then granted some furry creatures sentience with their "divine spark".

Check out the updates I'm referring to, bolded below.

Quote

The popori kingdom comprises two types of nature spirits: the elin, which appear as small female humanoids, and the woodland creatures these tiny beings have raised into consciousness, known simply as “poporis.”

Long ago, the goddess Elinu fragmented her pure and innocent essence creating spirits given physical form. These elin then used their divine spark to awaken furry beasts to sentience. Despite their very different physical forms, the spirits are alike at heart: full of life, curiosity, and tenacity. As a nation, poporis hold sacred their duty to protect nature, which has led to many clashes with the other races.

Some find poporis’ blunt communication style and quirky, mischievous behavior off-putting; others find it refreshing. But no one denies that their ferocity in battle makes them strong allies. Whether you make a popori your friend or your enemy, however, have a care: poporis are not afraid to stick their noses into your face—nor are they ashamed to stick them into your business.

And just for fun, check out some shots of the adorable Elin I've taken on my many journeys through the world of TERA :D

Thank you, Zyrusticace, for initially pointing out this update over in this thread! (Even if you are a dirty pigeon. <3)

Screenshots of the Week: Lancers | Japanese Teaser Site Open | Contribute to our Q&A Thread!

Hello, TERA Fans! This thread's got something for everybody-- even TeraFans Wiki - LancerLancers O:

Yesterday, Scapes posted this week's screenshots of the week and they're all of Lancers in action! They feature an Aman Lancer fighting a Kuma and three Lancers forming a protective barrier of Lancer-ness 8D

As noted on the official forums, if you look closely at the background of the second screenshot, there is a hot pink crystal sort of thing. Scapes has confirmed that, that is a gatherable crafting material. So, check out the screenshots below!

Quote

Forget the Iron Curtain–lancers can throw down an iron wall to protect themselves and their allies. Shield blocks are vital to a party's success as our plate-wearing heroes keep their lightly armored friends safe from harm. And, much to this kumas' chagrin, lancers are no easier to kill alone than they are in groups.

This innate toughness gives rise to the unofficial, and very cocky, lancer motto: "Bring it."

Today, TERA Fans translator Meiellink notified me that a Japanese TERA teaser site has now opened! Right now there doesn't appear to be any new news on the site, but they are playing the amazing G*Star 2009 trailer... maybe we'll see the 2010 trailer sooner than we think :D

Anyway, if you're going to be playing TERA from Japan, you should definitely check it out.

Finally, I just thought I'd spread the word about a new thread I started yesterday! The Q&A thread will be home to Super TERA Fans and New TERA Fans alike as we attempt to address simple questions with simple answers :]

If you have a simple question but you aren't sure where a question like yours might be answered in the abyss of TERA information, just ask it in the Simple Questions -> Simple Answers thread and a TERA expert will surely try to help :D

Lancer Column: Lance and Board

Lance and board. Doesn’t quite sound right does it?

A little information to start what will hopefully be a series of successful Lancer columns. As I haven’t been lucky enough to be in any of the FGTs (big hint to anyone in a position of power who reads this ;D), these columns will be largely made up of pure speculation and my opinions on articles I’ve read or videos I’ve seen. Until I get to try the game out for myself, that is.

---

What attracted me, personally, to the Lancer class were a few simple points. Heavy armour, fun gameplay mechanics, and a button for raising one’s shield. I realise the last point was more of a TERA mechanic as opposed to a Lancer mechanic, but it boils down to the one reason I always shied away from tank classes in previous MMOs I’ve played – interaction. I’ll use World of Warcraft as a basic example. In a nutshell, tanking in WoW consists mainly of standing still in front of the enemy with one eye on one’s health and one eye on one’s threat meter. With some exceptions, what the enemy itself is doing is largely unimportant so long as you keep oneself at the top of its threat list. The Lancer can’t do that. The Lancer needs to stand between the enemy and allies to use the shield to block attacks from reaching allies. The Lancer needs to actually press and hold a button to execute said block. The Lancer doesn’t stack a blocking stat and pray to the rng Gods that a portion of incoming damage is reduced.

Interaction. The one thing that tanking has lacked thus far in MMOs. The act of actually physically blocking attacks from reaching allies just gives that much more weight to the word “tank”. PvP is also a factor in my decision to play a Lancer in TERA when I mostly played as dps in other MMOs. It’s entirely possible, and sometimes the best thing to do, to just bypass a tank completely and ignore them until you’ve managed to beat down the squishies providing backup for the tank. With the collision detecting preventing enemies from running right through you, in theory it should be entirely possible for a Lancer and allies to command control of a choke point such as a bridge. With the lancer standing on the bridge or a mountain pass, shield raised, and said allies staying back a little to heal the Lancer and attack the enemies. With good coordination between the players, a choke point such as this could decide the outcome of the PvP encounter. A shield used for shielding.

This raises a very important question in my mind – race selection. Presumably the larger races such as Aman will have a larger hit box, resulting in an easier time in blocking attacks from reaching allies, or blocking enemies from passing the Lancer at a choke point. Not to say that the smaller races just won’t be able to do any of this. Will it be easier for larger races? Will the shield hit box be the same size for each character? This is highly unlikely, and it could possibly mean that for certain points in the game, a Lancer will have a restricted choice of race. Honestly, I can’t imagine a Popori Lancer having the same size shield hit box as an Aman Lancer.

Then we come to the Lancer’s role in parties. Up until now, I’ve only been talking as if Lancers were only viable as tanks. This is not necessarily true. With proper gearing and (very heavy on the assumptions here) speccing, Lancers might well be able to output some proper dps numbers. Mostly for PvP and solo content, of course, but with good enough reactions it could be possible for a Lancer to do extra dps in PvE by sacrificing some tank-like stats. This may strike some of you as an odd thing to do, but with TERA’s heavy emphasis on reacting to enemy attacks and raising your shield in time, or even moving out of the attack’s area of effect altogether, Lancers may end up as quite the dps boost to the party. Imagine this – you’re PvPing and you see a Lancer heading your way. Your party is occupied elsewhere, so is the Lancer’s. It’s common knowledge that tanks generally don’t do much damage, so you figure that you could prevent the Lancer’s advance for a while to give your party a chance to catch up to you for backup. The Lancer blocks one of your attacks which is followed by Riposte. Suddenly, Crash Gear then Shield Bash. You’re stunned and have reduced armour. The Lancer’s doing a lot more damage than you first anticipated. You try to run away to get some breathing room and think about what to do next. The Lancer charges. You try to run again? Noose.

Not only could play like this do quite a decent amount of damage, but coming from someone that’s supposed to be a tank? It may well leave a lot of players disorientated; damage and ferocity unexpected from a tank. Even with gearing for damage output, with good reactions and anticipation of what other people will do it such situations, a skilled Lancer could be a very formidable opponent.

This column feels a little too technical to me. I'll try to break up the next one if I can. Let me know what you think.

To me, this opportunity is as much a learning experience as it is about sharing my opinions and experiences with the community. Maybe I said something outrageous; maybe I said something completely wrong, any feedback is good feedback. The more feedback I receive then the more I can better myself and better my columns.
I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it. Peace out.

Lancer

TERA-Online.com said:

Lancers wield the largest weapons and the largest defenses. Stalwart defenders, unstoppable like the incoming tide, their lances give them long reach in combat, while they shield weaker party members from enemy attacks.

Lancers are “stoic guardians” able to take damage, but also able to dish it out when the situation requires. Despite being a relatively slow class due to their predisposition to prefer blocking to dodging, the Lancer is nevertheless able to focus damage very precisely. This allows them to excel in single combat, though they are also able to drop their defenses and charge into the battle to scatter smaller foes from the field as necessary. They are the center of every battle, protecting allies and bolstering defenses, all while dealing devastating blows to unsuspecting opponents.

Class Skills

Combo Attack

Assigned to the left mouse button by default, Combo Attack is a starting skill, and one that is used frequently. The nature of the lance ensures that the Combo Attack is very narrowly focused, allowing the Lancer to attack a single enemy with great precision. Typically the Lancer will strike normally three times, and then perform a more powerful thrust on the fourth attack. When groups of enemies crowd the front of the Lancer, Combo Attack enables the Lancer to strike multiple enemies at once in a straight line. The best strategy for ensuring this condition is attracting a group's attention, and then moving back slightly, so that they charge at you in a group. One attack and they immediately regret their impetuosity!

Shield Block

Shield Block is perhaps the staple of the Lancer class, allowing them to heavily mitigate damage, transforming a foe's powerful assault into a harmless tap. By default, Shield Block is assigned to the "C" key, and must be held down in order to maintain the stance. The Lancer must be facing in the direction from which the attack is coming. Doing so will heavily reduce the amount of damage taken by the Lancer. This ability works equally well defending against magical as well as ranged attacks. With an instant casting time, this ability allows the Lancer to react quickly to each creature's "tells", rewarding the Lancer with an eye for sensing incoming attacks.

Ferocious Charge

Ferocious Charge is the perfect tool for breaking that stalemate, charging out of an unpleasant situation, or for mauling multiple foes all at once. The Lancer leans forward and charges in the direction they were facing when the charge was initiated. This produces a barrage of strikes against any enemies in the Lancer's path. While the damage for these multiple strikes is relatively low when taken individually, they cumulatively produce a significant amount of carnage. During the final seconds of the charge, the Lancer unleashes several powerful blows, following through with the entire strike by fully extending the arm and thrusting the lance through the last of their foes. This ability is most effective when initiating a fight, charging into groups of enemies, or when an enemy is knocked down and unable to respond.

Riposte

Riposte, earned at level six, is an incredibly useful "passive" skill that allows the Lancer to counter-attack each time they emerge from the Shield Block ability. Once a Lancer has successfully initiated Shield Block (and hopefully put an end to an enemy's attack), the Lancer may counter-attack by using their Combo Attack while still blocking. This results in the Lancer bashing the enemy with their shield, and then stepping through for a powerful thrust immediately afterward. This skill is especially useful for maintaining the Lancer's momentum in combat, allowing them to seamlessly transition between attacking and blocking.

Roar of Defiance

Roar of Defiance, acquired at level ten, is the Lancer's first "aggro" ability. When activated, the Lancer unleashes a roar which attracts the attention of surrounding enemies. The range of this ability is large enough to allow the Lancer to capture the notice of fairly distant enemies. In addition, the Roar affects the Lancer's surroundings in a full circle, allowing them to dominate the battle from its center. This is the Lancer's primary means of protecting group members from unwanted attention by monsters, in addition to the Shield Block ability. The relatively low cooldown requirement means that the Lancer is able to continuously maintain the hate of their enemies throughout the battle.

High Level Skills

While the skills received during the first ten levels represent the Lancer's core functionality, the later skills involve significantly more utility, permitting the Lancer to further find their niche within the group.

An often frustrating experience for a young Lancer is being taken unaware and knocked down in a fight, unable to initiate Shield Block. The Soaring Attack ability remedies this nicely, allowing a Lancer to quickly rise from the ground and get back into the battle with a strong counter-attack. Though only usable every twelve seconds, this ability lets the Lancer respond that much faster to enemy attacks, which is essential when a second's hesitation may be the difference between a successful block or certain death. While the Lancer's powerful strikes are often enough to knock down opponents as a matter of course, the ability Shield Bash allows them to take advantage of this situation more accurately. Using this ability on an enemy and then rushing in with Ferocious Charge is often enough to frighten the staunchest of opponents. At level twenty the Lancer is provided with the Noose ability, which allows the Lancer to pull enemies to them from a significant distance. Importantly, the range of this ability is fifty percent greater than that of Roar of Defiance, allowing the Lancer to have even further control over events on the battlefield.

Thus far, most of the Lancer's abilities have directly impacted the battlefield either by damaging opponents with powerful attacks, or by controlling enemies by drawing their animosity and/or the monster itself. However, at level twenty-six the Lancer is granted its first debuff, Crash Gear. This ability reduces an enemy's armor, allowing both the Lancer and their party to deal increased damage for ten seconds. It is important to note that this ability can be stacked up to three times on the same opponent for each successive attack after Crash Gear is applied. Getting in those attacks is certainly doable for an attentive Lancer, and even more so when activated with allies nearby! Moving up to level thirty, this trend of granting the Lancer group-friendly abilities continues. Aura of Inspiration places a buff on group members which increases their defense by fifteen percent. The fact that this Aura does not affect the Lancer is very flavorful, further heightening the Lancer's persona as the stalwart defender of their party. Granted at level thirty-six, the Lancer receives a second "aggro" ability called Infuriate. The primary difference between Infuriate and the similar ability Roar of Defiance seems to be one of degree. Infuriate has a significantly longer cooldown cost. However, the name of this ability seems to indicate that the hate generated by this skill is also significantly improved over the more frequently used, but less powerful Roar. This skill enables the Lancer to take charge of a chaotic battlefield, ensuring that the attention of surrounding enemies is securely focused on them, once again protecting their party from sure death!
