Many people will discover at this film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical spectacular, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA with mixed emotions. There are people who will be upset that Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, who played the recent Christine and Phantom respectively, were not allowed to recreate their signature roles. There will also be people who’ll be disappointed that this version is not a literal translation of the stage musical. Finally, we have the critics of both Webber and director Joel Schumacher, who have both been accused of miserable excess in previous projects in their individual careers. Taken as a film version however, this PHANTOM stands the test of time, not only as a amazing musical film, but as one of the more faithful versions of Gaston Laroux’s romance/horror new.

Starting with a sunless and white prologue, the film tells the record of budding opera star Christine Daae and the two men who fight for her heart: the pleasant Viscount who she knew in childhood, and the mysterious Phantom of the Paris Opera House who hides his ugliness leisurely a half-mask while sponsoring Christine’s career. Like the stage production, this film is awash in attractive colors and sets that would place many epics to shame. It’s well balanced by solid performances that succor propel the romantic, if melodramatic, epic along.

Gerard Butler makes for a wonderfully dim and obsessive Phantom, while allowing the character to withhold the audience’s sympathy. Miranda Richardson is solid as the dour Madame Giry, who knows the Phantom’s secret. Minnie Driver easily gets the most laughs as the over-bearing diva, Carlotta. (It’s animated to notice that Ms. Driver’s singing is dubbed in the film qualified, while she actually sings the current closing credits melody “Learn to be Lonely.”) Patrick Wilson makes for a stalwart, if somewhat bland, Viscount. But the strongest impression is made by the fair Emmy Rossum. Only in her gradual teens when filming, she turns in a astounding performance with a crystal positive reveal that does justice to Webber’s get. Joel Schumacher does a strong enough job in directing this film, allowing the music and the screenplay that he co-wrote with Webber to shine.

In the kill, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is a delectable spectacle that does justice in its acquire map to both the stage current and Laroux’s book. As such, this is a film I highly recommend.

You know that a movie works when it follows you long after you’ve left the movie theater. I saw the Broadway tour of “Phantom of the Opera” a few years ago and it has been my popular musical since. I esteem it more than Cats, 42nd Street, West Side Chronicle, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon…you name it. Its romanticism and ravishing songs honest blew me away.

I was then somewhat hesitant to gaze the film version, fearing that it would not live up to my expectations. A small over two hours later and I found myself crying over the Phantom (Gerard Butler) and his savor for the young Christine Daae (Emmy Rossum) as she decides between him or the nobleman Raoul (Patrick Wilson) .

In short, I admire this movie! It was everything I had hoped it to be and more. The narrative is faithful to the stage version but it also gives the audience a closer scrutinize into the lives of the three main characters. The art direction, sets and costumes are fine and breath-taking. And the songs are brought to life superbly by the talented cast of young newcomers (Rossum, Wilson) and film veterans (Miranda Richardson, Ciaran Hinds, Simon Callow) .

I know many would argue that Michael Crawford was a qualified Phantom…that is, except for me. I always felt that Crawford’s mumble was too high-pitched and not manly enough. To me, Gerard Butler is more effective Phantom. Apart from being incredibly comely (under that make-up), astronomical and well built, he also has this rough and raspy verbalize that is very masculine and paunchy of passion. He IS the Phantom! Emmy Rossum has a hauntingly gorgeous grunt and has an innocence and sweetness that fits perfectly for Christine. Her boom gives me goosebumps! Patrick Wilson’s romantic advise contrasts well with that of the Phantom’s. After all, one is supposed to be a nobleman and the romantic hero while the other is shaded, mysterious and brooding (like the misunderstood Quasimodo of “Hunchback of the Notre Dame.”) But even without the singing, Gerard Butler turns in a memorable and passionate performance as the Phantom and you really do feel for him in the raze. If there was one fault to this film, for me, it would be Minnie Driver’s Carlotta. She was so over the top that I sometimes found her grating.

All in all, however, I walked out of the theater wanting to view “Phantom of the Opera” again and again (I’ve now seen it twice and counting) . I couldn’t bag the music out of my head and have since purchased the CD. I can’t wait for the dvd to arrive out so I can glance it over and over. I highly recommend it to fans of the stage version, music lovers and incurable romantics everywhere. And if you loved the songs, be distinct to win up the equally excellent soundtrack. This phantom will haunt you long after you’ve left the movie theater….and I have gladly fallen under its spell. Favorable!

This is a fabulous series…beautifully photographed, and thoroughly piquant. Michael Wood’s enthusiasm for his subject is infectious. His narration is far from obsolete lecture – it is accessible, expressive and deeply arresting at times.

What I enjoyed most about the series was the fact that there were no “dramatic re-enactments” of historical places, people and events. (…as NBC did in a mini-series made a few years after the release of “Legacy,” complete with lots of simulated violence.) Rather than using computer generated models of cities, Wood takes us to the steady sites, passes through their crumbling walls, walks their time-worn streets and makes them near alive for us.

Many of those cities are inhabited to this day, and rather than employ costumed actors to depict the musty residents, we instead observe them reflected in the faces of their living descendants. We examine how something of the ancients endures to this day in the appearance and customs of approved people, often in unexpected ways. We learn that human nature hasn’t changed over the millenia as remarkable as we might like to occupy it has…a bit disheartening at first, but Wood shares his hope that we might learn from the mistakes of those who came before us.

I found this series of documentaries to be well presented, view provoking, and enlightening. Recommended viewing to anyone who wants to expand their knowledge of the world and its cultures. You reach away feeling proud of human achievements and with a right sense that an commence mind about our fellow man is both practical and the only blueprint in which to acquire. A truly international historical and cultural guide, well scripted and very palatable.

Watched with my teenager and found this to be a very nice review of Nelson Mandela’s life. Starts with how he was raised and educated to be the assistant to a village chief through his election as President of South Africa. The initial focus on how he was raised and interviews with his sister and others who know him gave sterling insight into his character that made him such a fighter for justice and mountainous leader.

Specifically, the narritive straggle was expedient, and it gave persons a diagram to perceive the developement of Nelson Mandela and the freedom movement in South Africa. The statement that there was not alot about De Klerk, I also agree in substance and tone. De Klerk appeared commensurate to what Nelson Mandela had been saying all of his life, that he was always against racism, no pro one ethnic group or the other. This is something that De Klerk was not committed to from the beginning of his life apparently, and he, like Pharoah in Egypt, saw the writing on the wall with respect to the newness that was coming. Nonetheless, when Freedom finally came to South Africa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who I know personnally, led all of us in a hand clap for Mr. De Klerk. This memoir, was about Nelson Mandela finally, not about Mr. De Klerk, and hence I didn’t score the inclusion of De Klerk or the amount of time that he appeared, particularly out of balance with the main drive of the record.

It’s favorable to say that Charley Brewster has a short attention span. In fact, that’s probably an understatement. But, when Charley oversees his fresh neighbor committing destroy through his bedroom window, he finally gets some focus in his life. Great to the scare of his family and friends, however, his unique focus is on vampires. After a violent confrontation with Jerry, the creature next door, Charley is desperate to slay the monster, and he attempts to enlist the wait on of local “Scare Night” terror host Peter Vincent, the doughty vampire killer, to do it. Unbelieving Peter is reluctant, but Charley’s girlfriend Amy and creepy-geek friend, Disagreeable Ed, convince him with a bit of financial persuading. Their diagram is to indicate to Charley that Jerry Dandrige is not a vampire at all, but they are in for the awe of their lives, and it’s anybody’s guess who will survive the genuine “Scare Night!”

“Panic Night” is an 80s vampire flick for the classic anxiety fanatic! Paying homage to such staples as Black Shadows and the Hammer Dracula franchise, this surprising diminutive scare film supplies vampire lore and cliches aplenty, set aside together so skillfully that the result is this panic fan’s accepted vampire indulgence. Of course, this favoritism is in no limited section due to spectacular effects and performances! The cast seems tailor made for their roles as they play them, even if some choices seem a bit peculiar superficially. Hard to imagine this vampire pining away over the centuries for Married With Children’s Marcy D’Arcy, but Amanda Bearse plays the role of the teenage object of Chris Sarandon’s desires to perfection. Chris, himself, is powerfully convincing and menacing as the hip, 80’s vampire. Extremely well adjusted to the times, too. His slave-boy zombie, Billy Cole, is played by an excellently creepy Jonathan Stark, but he’s out-creeped by the always somewhat disturbing Stephen Geoffreys as Obnoxious Ed. Of course, William Ragsdale IS Charlie Brewster, and his portrayal is what propels the film. The icing on THIS cake, however, aside from the teenage victim in the window that I’ve had a crush on all my life, played by someone named Irina Irvine, is the gleaming performance of one of my all-time faves, Roddy “Bullwhip” McDowall, as Peter Vincent, vampire killer! The behind, astronomical Roddy McDowall is definitely the yeast that raises this film from vampire movie mediocrity. Despite the nearly bare bones disc, featuring only a trailer and double-sided widescreen/fullscreen selection, this DVD is a must beget for vampire, dread, and McDowall fans alike. Be prepared for some cheezy 80’s music and a colossal time that you’ll want to experience again and again! Also, be certain to check out “Panic Night 2,” one of the best sequels ever made!

At first explore, Dismay Night looks like another cheesy vampire film: a young man figures out that a vampire has moved next door, no one believes him, the vampire comes after him, his only hope is an outmoded dismay actor, etc. It’s shapely predictable, lawful down to the whole thing about the boy’s girlfriend bearing a striking resemblance to one of the vampire’s used flames. So yes, in its beget blueprint, Dismay Night is cheesy. At the same time, though, it is oh so noteworthy more than you would request – an fascinating, somewhat creepy vampire film that features some ample acting and some really impressive special effects. You ask to view really unpleasant, noticeably cheap special effects in a film like this, but Dread Night hits a home rush in this department.

William Ragsdale plays Charley Brewster, a typical horror-loving kid who impartial so happens to secure out that his modern neighbor is a vampire – naturally, no one believes him, including his friend Rotten Ed (Stephen Geoffreys in a truly annoying performance) and his girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse, who went on to play Marcie on Married With Children) . For some reason, Charley decides to be commence about his suspicions, thus letting the vampire know that he knows his small secret – not a brilliant recede, as Charley soon learns courtesy of a tiny visit from the fresh guy in town. This vampire, I must say, looks nothing like your typical Count Dracula; he actually looks like a reject from Dance Fever, making it a cramped hard for me to bewitch him seriously (although the threat of “Deney Terrio” busting out some disco moves in the film’s one night club scene certainly had me feeling uneasy) . In desperation, Charley goes to the only man he thinks can wait on him – Peter Vincent, Vampire Killer (Roddy McDowall) . Vincent killed many a vampire – in the movies – and he is now the local host of Dread Night, a late-night alarm reveal. As you might request, Vincent doesn’t really hold in vampires and, once he sees that Charley is telling him the truth, he isn’t too anxious to fight them, either. McDowall is really stout in this movie; he is the lynchpin upon which most of the movie’s success depends.

I can’t say enough about the special effects, especially those in the film’s climactic moments. As a scare fan, I really delight in the filmmakers spending the time and money to give me such an impressive exhibit. The set features a number of clichés as well as a couple of “oldest tricks in the book,” but the inspired performance of Roddy McDowell combined with the improbable special effects leads me to bump my rating up from four to five stars. This probably won’t be the best vampire film you’ve ever seen, but I am distinct that fans of the genre will not fail to earn hastily a kick out of Apprehension Night.

Ok, so this season isn’t as first-rate as Season 9 but that doesn’t construct it unpleasant. In fact there are some really beneficial episodes in this season. As someone who thinks the indicate should’ve ended after Season 11, how can I possibly reject this season. And now a brief summary.

1. Lard of the Dance – For this episode, the Lisa “A” legend with Lisa Kudrow has its laughs but for me, it’s all about the Homer and Bart “B” anecdote where Homer thinks he can construct a fortune by selling grease. You can’t go immoral with Homer and a crazy design.

2. The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace – Written by the prolific John Schwartzwelder, this episode features Homer attempting to emulate Thomas Edison’s prolific inventing after suffering a mid-life crisis.

3. Bart the Mother – An episode that got too sappy IMO. Bart accidently shoots a mother bird and decides to care for the eggs she apparently left. Nice third act though.

4. Treehouse of Fright IX – Laughable at the time but ages trusty fleet. I – after Snake is executed, his toupee is donated to the one man that needs it most, Homer. II – What? Bart and Lisa are trapped in an Itchy and Scratchy cartoon? How humiliating! III – Hey kids, remember Jerry Springer? Well when he’s not dancing with the actual dancers, he has time to give a voice-over.

5. When You Dish upon a Star – What? There are celebrities who determine to live in Springfield? Specifically Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger (in happier times) not only live there but settle to hire Homer as an assistant. Also, you acquire the occasional pop-in by Ron Howard who is there to raid the liquor cabinet.

6. D’oh-in in the Wind – After visiting the commune where his mother hid, Homer decides that he wants to be a hippie which is due to inflame the other hippies who live there (guest voiced by Martin Mull and the tremendous George Carlin) .

7. Lisa Gets an “A” – Lisa cheated on a test? Well its proper. Again the Homer B myth is better when he takes care of a misunderstood lobster named Pinchy. The first episode with that gigantic educator Situation Comptroller Atkins.

8. Homer Simpson in: “Kidney Pains” – Impartial because Homer caused Grandpa to lost functionality in both off his kidneys, that doesn’t mean that Homer actually has to donate one of his bear kidneys to establish Grandpa’s life! Does it? Written by John Schwartzwelder.

9. Mayored to the Mob – This is a hilarious episode from the BiMonSciFiCon to Sign Hamill in “Guys and Dolls” Yes, Luke be a Jedi tonight! Also, after protecting Mayor Quimby from a horde of furious sci-fiers, Quimby decides to hire Homer as his bodyguard.

10. Viva Ned Flanders – Probably because there was already a casino in Springfield, none of the Simpsons ever decided to go to Las Vegas, that is until now. When Ned Flanders decides to manufacture up for a life of not living on the edge, he decides to call Homer. While it was a silly episode, it helped spawn that undying premise of the Vegas wives.

11. Wild Barts Can’t Be Broken – After a spree of wanton vandalism (caused of course by Homer, Lenny, Carl, and Barney) the town enacts a curfew that prevents the kids from leaving the house.

12. Sunday, Cruddy Sunday – Fred Willard guest voices as the recede agent who books a gigantic group of the Springfield gents to a coast to Smart Bowl XXXIII. A notice of trivia, the date that this aired was also the premiere date of Family Guy. Read into that any meaning you like.

13. Homer to the Max – Written by John Schwartzwelder, this episode quiet makes me laugh. Homer gets a lot of respect when a frigid detective on TV named Homer Simpson hits the cloak. However, after the pilot, they turn Det. Homer Simpson into a slothful, insensible ignoramus forcing Homer to change his name to (drumroll) MAX POWER. Remember, nobody snuggles with Max Power, you strap yourself in and feel the Gs.

14. I’m with Cupid – Apu’s extravagant gifts and affection for Manjula on Valentine’s day force the rest of the male Springfield population to become irate. Guest appearance by Sir Elton John.

15. Marge Simpson in: “Screaming Yellow Honkers” – Probably the first sitcom to acquire on road rage (not to mention the burgeoning phenom of female SUV driving) was the Simpsons. When Homer accidentally buys a lady Canyonero (Canyonero Yeee Hah!) Marge decides to drive it causing her to invent road rage.

16. Effect Room for Lisa – A nice Homer-Lisa epic where for the first time, Lisa explores her enjoy insensitivity to Homer. Also, a lot of Lindsay Naegle (before she was Lindsay Neagle) as the OmniTouch obtain.

17. Maximum Homerdrive – After losing a steak eating contest to a truck driver who eventually dies, Homer decides to train the monotonous man’s payload. BTW, who knew that those trucks could drive themselves? Written by John Schwartzwelder.

18. Simpsons Bible Stories – Rather than unprejudiced glimpse Halloween themed ideas, why not try a more scary book like….I dunno…..the Bible. I – Homer and Marge are at the Garden of Eden, II – the Jews will speed the wrath of the ghastly pharoah by the leadership of Milhouse? III – Bart as David who now has to face Goliath’s son, who is objective as grand, and angrier.

19. Mom and Pop Art – Underrated episode where Homer becomes a conceptual artist by accident. But when the art community rebuffs his newer work, Homer decides to try an artistic stunt so revolutionary that the art community would have to respect him. Also some stout Arizona Residence bashing by Ned.

20. The Primitive Man and the “C” Student – After Bart pulls a stunt that forces the IOC to reject Springfield as the situation of the Olympic games, he has to do community service at the customary folks’ home. Meanwhile, Homer is discouraged when his mascot view, the Springfield Spring, is rendered useless forcing him to near up with other ideas for using the spring.

21. Monty Can’t Consume Me Savor – Why don’t the people like Monty Burns? That’s what Monty wants to know especially after the dashing billionaire Arthur Fortune comes to town. Written by John Schwartzwelder.

22. They Saved Lisa’s Brain – Now this is a gargantuan episode. After witnessing the obscene and idiotic behavior of the townspeople, Lisa writes an op-ed which allows her to join Springfield’s Mensa society. Soon they win over the town which causes an uproar. Some vast Funny Book Guy lines and oh btw, did I mention that Stephen Hawking makes an appearance as the negate of reason.

23. Thirty Minutes over Tokyo – The Simpsons desire for an economical vacation leads them to hold a toddle to Japan. Because after going to Australia, why not try their luck at another country?

The DVD location inclues audio commentary on every episode (outlandish but the audio commentaries are funnier than the unusual batch of shows), animation showcases, and many other special features.

To me this season is where the running gags begin losing some steam and the reliance on “star” cameos really started to outshine the sage and plotlines.

I do agree there are plenty of respectable moments but this is truly the pivotal season where the number of laugh out loud, quotable, classic scenes can be counted and from here on out they began to dwindle to where we are today. Not to say that America’s approved family doesn’t detached earn us laugh, it’s unbiased not as often, generally not as loud and sometimes not for the intended reasons.

Homer generates most of the chuckles this season, from his beer fueled drive through the halls of Sringfield Elementary to his stint as bodyguard to the Mayor. He gets a pet lobster, becomes Max Power, takes an introspective wobble in a “whale egg” (according to Ralph Wiggum), discovers his middle name, and of course takes Flanders to Las Vegas in one of the season’s stand-out episodes (including one of my well-liked lines, something about “Vegas doesn’t rob fine to out-of-towners, win your money someplace else”)

Of course the die-hards will acquire this anyway and why not? It will entertain us. I will, however, bet we don’t see these episodes with the frequency and level of enjoyment of the first 8 or 9 seasons.

After a long hiatus, a current Caillou DVD is out. It’s generally up to the standard of the past releases, but doesn’t really hold considerable original or absorbing in the intention of special features.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Caillou – Caillou’s Family Fun! Click Here

The DVD is divided into a fraction about Caillou and his family and a share about Caillou and animals/pets. Viewers will eye Caillou taking pictures with his Dad’s old-fashioned camera, meeting Gilbert for the first time, picking strawberries, visiting a fire spot and learning about dogs that have jobs. (To picture a few of the segments.) The puppet segments feature Teddy and Gilbert helping Rexy out when he’s upset because he doesn’t have a family and then later Teddy and Rexy dressing up as dogs. The normal musical and real-kids segments are also interwoven throughout (for those that like these, and they’re easily skipped past if you or your kids don’t) . Oh, and don’t anxiety about whiny/bratty Caillou — he’s hardly anywhere to be found on here.

The special features are character biographies (normally shown at the ruin of the TV note), Parents’ Information (a few screens to read — taken from the website), coloring pages (only for those with DVD-ROM) and a color-matching game. The describe and sound quality are astronomical — the recount is full-screen as normal and there are also close-captions (no subtitles) . Also, prefer the PBSKids logo on the main menu for a frigid PBSKids promo plot.

My daughter loves Caillou, but has been very upset with this video. For some reason the producers decided to interweave yarn vignettes with puppets and live action — my daughter spends the duration of each segment complaining that she wants Caillou, and I exhaust lots of time with my fingers on the remote. I wish the producers had identified the DVD disclose more clearly; we’d have bought something else.

Christmas impartial isn’t Christmas unless you glance at least one version of A Christmas Carol, and this is by far my celebrated. George C. Scott gives one of the greatest performances I have ever seen an actor give; he truly becomes Ebenezer Scrooge to the fullest degree possible. Scott can say more with honest the slightest hint of a facial movement than many actors can say during the course of an entire movie. All of the performers here are wonderful, bringing to life adored characters such as Bob Cratchit, Dinky Tim, and Scrooge’s nephew Fred. All four spirits are grand, none more so than Scrooge’s veteran partner Jacob Marley; having Marley’s jaw fall after untying the burial cloth holding his mouth closed is an well-known aspect of the chronicle and certainly does perform an impression on the viewer. This is unbiased one example of the moviemakers’ faithfulness to Charles Dickens’ novel story; another would be the inclusion of the two depressed children, Ignorance and Want, beneath the robes of the Ghost of Christmas Demonstrate.

This timeless anecdote works extremely well on its enjoy, but the unsurpassed acting skills of Scott produce it almost more than staunch. The change wrought in him during the course of the night, as he changes from a man of crass materialism and unkindness to a repentant soul pleading for a chance to change his ways, is powerfully presented and really touches the viewer emotionally. The simple happiness revealed in the lives of Bob Cratchit and others are as heart-warming as the forgotten mistakes and distress of a younger Scrooge are agonizing. If there is any heart out there that is not touched by the goodness and courage of Microscopic Tim, I don’t even want to know about it. No matter how many times you ogle this movie, it proves itself salubrious of bringing a traipse to your watch, a lump in your throat, and ultimately the very spirit of lawful holiday cheer and Christian charity that Dickens intended it to philosophize.

I cannot say I have seen every adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but I really cannot maintain any other version could exceed the quality and emotional impact of this one. No matter how many times I read the chronicle or view the movie, it remains a source of eternal joy to me. This is more than a movie for me; it is an indispensable and primary fraction of each and every Christmas holiday season.

George C. Scott makes an outstanding Scrooge in this 1984 TV production of the Christmas classic. The legend is once again told of a miser, gloomy and alone. He shuns Christmas and helping others, only doing things that will increase his personal wealth. But then one fateful Christmas Eve, he’s visited by four spirits who try to demonstrate him another blueprint. Will it be enough to redeem him?

I admire this memoir, usually enjoying it in a couple forms over the course of December. This particular film version is my accepted. Probably helps that I’ve watched it almost every year since it came out. The acting is righteous, especially from Scott. The costumes, scenery, and effects are incredible as well, and they stick very finish to the current epic. Fair watching a few minutes, I secure… in and want to peep the whole thing all over again.

This DVD is the perfect method to seek the film. The narrate and sound are remarkably certain for an almost 20 year passe made for TV film. Definitely better then my primitive recorded from TV tape. The film is presented in its new ratio – chunky frame. While it would have been nice to have an extra or two, the quality of the movie makes up for this absence in my concept.

If you’re looking for a film version of this classic epic for the holidays, recognize no further. This movie is clear to become a tradition in your family.

Everyone is entitled to his/her thought, but I disagree with the other reviews I’ve read. I rated this five stars because I don’t gain this is the slay of the series. I own that it is a perfect setup for future seasons. If this is actually the absolute demolish of the indicate, I agree that it is very abominable, but if this is objective the raze of season one, it’s gigantic. It shows the modern reign of chronos, the fate of the guyvers and aptom, and it introduces the newly enhanced guyver 1. It sets up the characters and the conflict to be resolved in season 2.

As far as the action is concerned, I view it was adequate to deny the anecdote. It wasn’t wonderful, but it was peaceful challenging.

Overall, this was a large series, and this DVD had a favorable season finale (that is, of course, if they get another season) . I highly recomend it.

I totally agree with the other review. If anything he was being too kind. Two of the episodes are nothing but the yammering and whining of the secondary characters who are well aware that the only thing they can do is conceal. The only do they ever have is to provide hostages to Chronos or prevent the Guyvers from using their heavy weapons for panic of toasting their friends.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Guyver, Vol. 7: Armor of the Gods! Click Here

When the main characters finally reveal up the fighting is extremely awful and plain.

I disagree with the other review in one respect: I assume the ragged Guyver series was better than this one in one respect. The former series did not pull its punches when it came to fighting. The outmoded opening showed the Guyver blasting out the eyes and crushing the skull of a Zoanoid. The fresh series tones down the gore quite a lot and the fights are far less intense.

This unique series does have better art, and it does do a better job of explaining what’s going on and the encourage chronicle is worthy richer. But like the first series it ends leaving virtually every major plotline dangling leaving us with no account closure.

Overall this series is a long and expensive saunter going nowhere.

They may be too traditional to like for their entertainment value alone, but these 13 quiet, black-and-white cartoons from the 1920s have a ton of historic value. They’re what remains of the 26 shorts Walt Disney did honest before Mickey Mouse, during 1927 and 1928. The animation team included a trio of future stars — Ub Iwerks, who would go on to plan Mickey, Friz Freleng, who later drew many Bugs Bunny cartoons, and Rudy Ising, who went on to hasten Warner Brothers’ Merrie Melodies unit.

Though he got off to a rocky commence, Oswald was plenty current. With the same inspiring, spunky personality as his rodent successor, the Lucky Rabbit even had his gain merchandise — a chocolate-covered marshmallow Oswald candy bar, a stencil position and a pin-backed button. In 1928 Disney lost the rights to the rabbit to the shady distributor for Universal, replacing him with the very similar looking mouse we know and like today. Disney regained them in 2006, in exchange for allowing then-ABC television sportscaster Al Michaels to go to work for Universal’s network, NBC.

The cartoons have modern, orchestral soundtracks by Robert Israel, who earlier created the scores for The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection Vols. 1-3.

What makes the place terrific, however, are two unexpected additions. First, most of the shorts approach with audio commentary, which really makes them though-provoking. Second, Disc 2 is a Academy Award quality (really!) documentary about Iwerks, called “The Hand Gradual the Mouse,” that was produced by his granddaughter, Leslie. Since it wasn’t created by the Disney company, it’s an unprejudiced, balanced, warts-and-all portrayal. In fact, it’s the best inside discover at the history of company ever. Kelsey Grammar narrates.

Collectors will trace that this Treasures spot comes in a gold tin, not silver. Also included is a tiny lithograph that’s a sampling of some Oswald sketches, and a cute minute Oswald button.

By the plan, some of the post-Disney Oswalds are also now available on DVD. After Disney lost the rights to the character, Universal assigned the Lucky Rabbit to animator Walter Lantz, of Woody Woodpecker fame. The unique Woody compilation, The Woody Woodpecker and Friends Classic Cartoon Collection, includes a handful of Lantz’s Oswald shorts.

While not classic Disney animation, these cartoons are far ahead of the other cartoons produced at the same time. This is one of the most historic Disney DVD releases ever. The loss of Oswald was the thorn in Walt’s foot. This drove Walt to change his business practices. Sadly less than half of the Walt Disney produced Oswald Rabbit cartoons survive today.

Even with all the controversy surrounding Mel Gibson last year (and doesn’t it seem as if each unusual week brings another celebrity meltdown? ), I peaceful looked forward to seeing “Apocalypto.” Why? If for no other reason–the subject matter, subtitles, and lack of star power made it a audacious choice for a major studio release. Films of this nature generally go into diminutive distribution to effect an audience and indispensable word of mouth before expanding, if they ever do. But with Gibson at the helm, “Apocalypto” debuted with powerful fanfare and backing objective in time to be considered for 2006’s Academy Awards. For some reason, though, I aloof missed “Apocalypto” at the theaters. I have heard every description imaginable from those that have seen the film–from the “best movie ever” to “excessively violent and disturbing.” And while I wouldn’t go to either of those extremes, “Apocalypto” is certainly an accomplished adventure describe.

Set in venerable Mayan times, “Apocalypto” is essentially the harrowing waddle of one man, a youth named Jaguar Paw (a convincing Rudy Youngblood) . Living a simple and isolated existence, his tribe are very at home within the forest. One day, the unthinkable happens. They are attacked by another group with apparent intentions of enslaving whomever they don’t waste. Youngblood’s wife and son are stranded in an underground well, many others are murdered, and Youngblood is among a dozen or so who are rounded up and marched out in bondage. The subsequent skedaddle leads to a fantastical temple sequence, where it becomes sure that the prisoners are not to become slaves–but sacrifices. The remainder of the film deals with how Youngblood can dash this area. The temple scenes feature a cast of thousands, ritualistic and brutal slayings, and a mob mania that is horrible and believable. Racing against the clock to establish his wife, Youngblood must flee benefit through the jungle–where all he has to benefit him are his cunning and an almost spiritual connection to his surroundings. The action is practically nonstop, it’s inventive, and it is beautifully staged. Remarkable of “Apocalypto,” therefore, is absolutely riveting and wildly intelligent.

For the purists who will debate the film’s historical accuracy, I will neither insist or confirm the legitimacy of the events that transpire within “Apocalypto.” While there do seem to be some liberties taken with the historical timeline (as evidenced by a surprise in the ending–which I enjoyed despite its implausibility), I really don’t judge that this film aspires to be a “historical document.” Gibson has made an adventure tale using a Mayan backdrop. The feel and examine of his report stop as helpful as possible to the timeframe, however, I never interpreted this represent as a “upright” epic. Guess what? Fictional liberties are taken in every motion represent. Otherwise every motion relate would be a documentary–and even documentaries have an angle or slant which originate them less than “legal” in many cases. “Apocalypto,” at heart, is an effective action represent that makes moving spend of its Mayan setting.

I guess “Apocalypto” is not for the squeamish–however, the violence depicted is by no means modern by fresh film standards. You can view distinguished worse in today’s “torture” cinema, those films that pass for fear with unusual audiences. I enlighten what makes “Apocalypto” more sparkling is that the violence is in a believable context. There are some beheadings and some hunting scenes, but the brutality is intrinsic to the yarn “Apocalypto” is telling. I don’t gain serious minded filmgoers will be do off by seeing some savagery depicted in a film about conventional Mayan cultures–it’s not as if this is a Merchant/Ivory production with tea parties and witty banter.

I do recommend “Apocalypto.” Beautifully filmed, the technical merits of the film are beyond reproach. The cinematography, get, and editing all enhance this gripping epic. I imagine these elements really shone radiant for those who saw this on the ample camouflage. A astronomical action record that is for adults–check it out. KGHarris, 03/07.

A welcome change of sail for us who feel Hollywood keeps making the same describe over and over again. The first share of this film is the most unconventional but also hard to endure as only awful things seem to happen to the characters but once Act II arrives and the roam begins, grab on!. I can’t remmember the last time a film had my stomach in knotts like this one.

Some people here in Mexico have complained about the film’s historical accuracy since by the time the Spanish arrived in America, the Mayan civilization had already been taken over by other groups. In any case, Hollywood films are not the best draw to learn about history.

When Braveheart came out over 10 years ago I remmember a friend telling me: “who would have plan Mel Gibson was a actual director”, 2 films later he keeps surprising me with his directing skills. It’s too abominable the public has let themselves be convinced by the media that he’s the most detestable person to ever near out of Hollywood which is absurd. I guess they feel the more they discredit him the more they discredit “The Passion of the Christ”.

Great work Mel!
